The club was founded in 1984 when Lake United and Rumney Rangers merged. Six years later, FC Sully joined. After sponsorship, the club was called Inter CableTel Cardiff AFC in 1996. In 1999, after winning the Cup against Carmarthen Town, another change in Inter Cardiff FC and a year later after the merger with University of Wales Institute Cardiff in UWIC Cardif FC. Since summer 2012 the club has been called Cardiff Metropolitan University Football Club.
In the 2000/01 the club was relegated from the first division and played in the second division for six years. From 2011 to 2014, the club had slipped into the fourth division. This was followed by three ascents in four years. Since the 2016/17 season they have been first class again and the club was able to qualify for the European Cup three years later via a play-off.
