Inter graves is an encyclical of Pope Pius IX. , dated December 1, 1854.

content

In this encyclical the Pope proclaims his joy at the speedy completion of a dogmatic papal bull , with which, after long deliberation and with the help of his brothers, the immaculate conception of the Most Holy Mother of God will be determined as the apostolic dogma of the Catholic faith. He is reminiscent of the apostolic circular of his predecessor Gregory XVI. the further processing of which was carried out with great attention and discipline. Furthermore, as early as February 2, 1849, in his encyclical Ubi primum, he would have pointed out that he was lucky to be able to proclaim the papal bull shortly.

Announcement of a dogma

Finally he asked for the consent of all the bishops of this world, only then did he continue this encyclical and declare that he was filled with infinite joy, that their opinions on his wishes had been expressed and that they had met with great approval. He now orders that from now on December 8th should take place as the “Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary”, this would also be the day on which he wanted to announce the dogma (“ Ineffabilis Deus )”.
