history

The Charismatic Renewal, which arose from the Charismatic Movement, developed on the initiative of Catholic students around 1967 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh ( USA ). In prayer groups and at leisure, the met believers and gathered experience in the common spirituality . Subsequently, other Catholic universities in the USA were founded, including in 1970 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend ( Indiana ), from here the charismatic movement continued worldwide. At this university, an "International Communication Center" (ICO) was founded, which was dedicated to the task of maintaining contacts between the groups and supporting them in their work. Since 1973 the ICO has published a yearbook with the existing prayer groups. In 1977, 110 people from 60 nations met for a meeting at which an “International Committee” was set up; it took over the work of the ICO. In 1978, the official founding year of the ICCRS, an International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Office (ICCRO) was established in Brussels . It had nine members from Europe , Asia , North America , South America and Oceania . Cardinal Léon-Joseph Suenens , who was Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels , acted as ecclesiastical assistant . In order to ensure a faster and more intensive cooperation with the Holy See, the ICCRO moved to Rome in the Vatican in 1980 . The name change to International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Service (ICCRS) was connected with this. On September 14, 1993, the ICCRS was recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity as an international organization under papal law and included in the list of associations and associations of the faithful .
