Interrupted Melody (Original title: Interrupted Melody ) is a biographical film from 1955 about the struggle of the Australian opera singer Marjorie Lawrence with polio . It was directed by Curtis Bernhardt , with Glenn Ford , Eleanor Parker and Roger Moore in the lead roles .

Australian Marjorie Lawrence's dream is to become a great opera singer. To make this dream come true, she goes to Paris and studies singing. There she was discovered after a grandiose performance and rose to a world star at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City . But she soon developed severe polio and had to sit in a wheelchair from then on. But with the encouragement she received from her husband and relatives, she did not lose hope and began a second career.

The film is based on the 1949 autobiography Interrupted Melody by Marjorie Lawrence . When the filming was under discussion, she announced to the press that she wanted to take over the vocal part, but instead Eileen Farrell was hired for the vocal scenes. Lawrence later criticized the film as "untrue" to her life.

The film grossed approximately $ 1.8 million at the US box office.

"Emotional, sometimes overly sentimental conversation, especially interesting because of the excellent vocal interludes."

"Not since Columbia's One Night of Love made its appearance on screen, about 20 years ago, has there been such a completely satisfying mixture of great opera with a tender love story in the film, as in the MGM production Interrupted Melody."
