action

In 1171 a boy is supposedly still born, his mother dies in childbirth. A man comes into the hut and ventilates the newborn, which then begins to breathe independently. He hands the child over to the nurse, she should take care of the child, he will pick it up at times. If she gives it away, he'll cut off her head. The man leaves and shortly afterwards another man comes into the hut. He takes the child from the woman. At first he chokes it, but then he ventilates it again and takes it with him. He hands the child over to Sigimund von Laurin, who wants to name the child Isenhart if his heart is made of iron and will survive the next winter. He has it drawn up by a blacksmith at Laurin Castle.

Fifteen years later, Isenhart and Konrad von Laurin learned to read and write on behalf of Walther von Ascisberg in lessons from the monk Hieronymus; Walther himself taught them science and martial arts. But a cruel crime against Isenhart's lover, Anna von Laurin, ends his youth. Anna is murdered and her heart is cut out. The culprit is apparently found immediately: dealer Alexander von Westheim. The trader is executed, but still claims that Archbishop Wilbrand von Maulbronn was the murderer. Sigimund von Laurin then goes with his son Konrad and Isenhart to Maulbronn Monastery to find out from the bishop why the trader claimed this. There is a dispute between the bishop and Konrad, in the course of which Konrad slaps the bishop. The bishop then demands the extradition of Konrad, but his father defends himself. The bishop's army moves to Laurin Castle, it is destroyed and Konrad's parents are killed. Konrad is able to flee with his remaining sister Sophie, the maid Marie, monk Hieronymus and Isenhart. Walther von Ascisberg sends them near Spira .

Five years later, Isenhart and Konrad are employed as security guards in Spira and occasionally visit the farm of Konrad's sister Sophie von Laurin and her maid Marie nearby. The two men are called to a barn in which a young woman's heart has also been cut out. The real serial killer is on his way and Alexander von Westheim was wrongly executed. Together with Konrad, the medicus Günther von Martensen and his adlatus Henning von der Braake, Isenhart goes on the hunt for the serial killer. They suspect the red-haired and one-armed Michael von Bremen and pursue him to his castle in Tarup . You find him there, there is a brief duel and he flees deeper into his castle. There they find him hanged and assume suicide.

They ride back, past Sophie's court to Ascisberg Castle , to report to Walther. They find out that Michael von Bremen cannot be the murderer. Isenhart also learns that his biological father is Sydal von Friedberg, who earlier also murdered and took the hearts of the dead after he returned from Toledo . But Sydal was dead. Walther, Sydal and Michael fought together in the Battle of Dorylaum and therefore knew each other.

Isenhart and Konrad ride to Toledo , where they learn that Sydal von Friedberg, together with an Arab medicus, discussed the seat and immortality of the human soul and that the murderer continues to murder in Sydal's footsteps and wants to bring his work to completion. Sydal is still alive, but he has sworn off killing. In Toledo they also meet Wilbrand von Maulbronn. Konrad seriously injures the bishop and is able to escape with Isenhart.

Both ride back to Ascisberg Castle and learn that Walther has died and that he has made Isenhart his heir. There was another murder in Spira: a young monk whose heart was also cut out. Isenhart and Konrad ride to Spira and visit Sophie again at her farm. Father Jerome is dying. Isenhart discovers that Michael von Bremen could not have committed suicide because he could not have tied the cross knot on his neck with one hand. Isenhart suspects Günther von Martensen. In Spira, Isenhart learns that Günther von Martensen is seriously ill and has gone to the leprosy cave in Maulbronn with his adlatus. There he meets Henning, who shows him a kind of experimental device with which one can see the escape of the soul from the dying body. The dying lie on a stretcher and are weighed. Exactly at the time of death, people are getting 45 g lighter, the soul has escaped. Isenhart learns that Günther met Sydal in Toledo and was enthusiastic about his idea of looking for the soul in the pure heart. Günther continued the murders and Henning helped him. Henning, with his assistant Isenhart and Konrad, who has arrived in the meantime, overpowers them and flees through a corridor. Isenhart and Konrad follow him, the corridor leads into the monastery. There they are captured. Wilbrand von Maulbronn is alive and he wants to bring Isenhart and Konrad to Cardinal Ernst von Regensburg for condemnation the next day. Isenhart is able to free himself from his dungeon during the night. There is a fight between Isenhart and Henning and Isenhart learns that Henning is his half-brother. Meanwhile the cardinal arrives at the monastery and Isenhart and Konrad can accuse the bishop. The cardinal lets the judgment of God decide. In the final battle, Isenhart shoots the bishop with a crossbow and kills Henning.

Isenhart and Sophie become a couple, he "has arrived".

Reviews

“Thanks to the atmospheric setting, the genre between the romantic historical film and the dark mystery of the occult is largely successful, at least visually. On the other hand, when looking for perpetrators with too many secondary theaters of war and bizarre twists, you soon lose track of things. You shouldn't expect up-to- date investigation methods such as “ The Name of the Rose ”. Because Isenhart, who always looks freshly blown, is so far ahead of the Middle Ages with his forensics knowledge that the warrior can confidently be called a profiler knight. [...] Medieval CSI - played without heart and soul. "

“So cheap that in the supposedly icy winter landscape created with mountains of ' artificial snow ' there is not a breath of the protagonists' breath to be seen. And so cheap that you can hear dialogues that were last heard in the Karl May films of the early 1960s. So it is almost surprising that Thurn managed to give the film a dirty, dreary, gloomy atmosphere despite the lack of funds. Unfortunately, that alone is not enough. "

“Elaborately but awkwardly staged (television) historical and costume film, whose mixture of medieval sophistry and bloody slaughter does not work out. While everyday life only appears like a glimpse, the barbaric violence is broadly depicted in duels, in questionable judgments of God and the gruesome slaughter of the murderer. "

“Isenhart is preparing to become a kind of profiler of the Middle Ages. After the murder of his childhood sweetheart Anna, he goes in search of the criminal who ripped the heart out of his loved one. Knight games with a crime thriller - an unusual mix of genres, an idea with potential. 'Isenhart - The Hunt for the Soul Catcher', this road movie on horseback in chain mail and robe, quickly casts a spell over you. What Hansjörg Thurn, what the outfitters, the camera or the cutter conjure up for 120 minutes - in terms of craftsmanship that is even more than what Thurn's hit hit 'Die Wanderhure' had to offer. Unfortunately, the story gets bogged down in the meantime - and the film loses some of its drive. "
