The Italian football championship in 1908 was the eleventh Italian football championship , which was held by the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC).
organization
In 1908, the Italian Football Association banned the participation of foreign players in the championship for the first time, which, however, provoked violent protests at AC Milan and CFC Genoa , where players from Switzerland and England had been of decisive importance for the successes of recent years. The association therefore decided to organize the national championship for such teams - in which the previous championship trophy, the Spensley Cup, donated by the captain of the CFC Genoa - and the Italian championship with a new trophy for completely Italian teams. However, both AC Milan, CFC Genoa and FC Turin refused to take part in one of these tournaments.
The only symbolic title of national champion was won by Juventus Turin against the only remaining opponent SG Andrea Doria , so that he was entitled to the Spensley Cup. However, last year's champions AC Milan refused to hand over the trophy and preferred to give it back to the founder from Genoa. In order to avoid escalations, the association decided that the trophy would go to Milan permanently, even though they had only won it twice in a row. As I said, this national championship was not recognized by Juventus as champions anyway. This was still the winner of the Italian championship, but without foreign participation and with the new trophy Coppa Buni.
From March 1 to March 8, 1908, the regional playoffs for the Piedmont region took place. The final round took place from March 22nd to May 17th, 1908. There was only one registered team for the regions of Lombardy and Liguria, which is why the play-offs were canceled here.
There was another final round for which three teams could qualify. Each team played twice against each team during this final round (one home game and one away game). After these games, the team with the most points became champions.
Another side effect of these developments was that some members of AC Milan left the club and founded local rivals Inter Milan (FC Internazionale Milano) on March 9, 1908 . As the association's name Internazionale shows, they founded it with the aim of accepting foreign players and, contrary to the association's decision, to reinstate and re-establish them in the championship.
Attendees
For the first time the SG Pro Vercelli took part in the championship of the 1st category. In addition, the record champions CFC Genoa (6 titles) did not take part in the championship for the first time. The reigning champions AC Milan and the runner-up FC Turin were also missing . All of these clubs were absent because of their protest.
