The Italian Football Championship in 1898 was the first Italian football championship to be held by the Federazione Italiana Football (FIF), which had been founded shortly before.

organization

The strongest teams who were founding members of FIGC were chosen as participating teams . At that time these were the Turin clubs Internazionale Torino , FC Torinese and Società Ginnastica Torino as well as CFC Genoa . In contrast, today's record champions Juventus Turin , who at the time was clearly overshadowed by the three participating Turin clubs, was not taken into account .

The tournament was held on May 8, 1898 in the Velodromo Umberto I in Turin. The semi-final pairings took place in the morning, the two winners then met in the afternoon. The winner received a trophy, the Coppa Duca degli Abruzzi to it by the Duke of Abruzzi Prince Luigi Amedeo , a nephew of King Umberto I was handed over. The games took place in front of about 100 spectators who paid 197 lire per seat.
