" Ivlia " is a modern reconstruction of an ancient Greek rowing warship ( galley ) with oars on two levels ( Bireme ) and an important example of the experimental archeology . Between 1989 and 1994 the ship undertook six extensive international, historical and geographical voyages of discovery in the footsteps of the ancient seafarers.

history

Shipbuilding

The main sponsor of the shipbuilding was the Black Sea shipping company (BLASCO). The ship was constructed in 1989 in the Soviet Navy Shipyard 1 in the city of Sochi . Ivlia was built from oak and Siberian larch , the oars from beech . Technical design of the project was carried out by specialists from Nikolayev University of Shipbuilding. After processing the available scientific data (old images on vases and reliefs, written and archaeological sources), the members of the Odessa Archaeological Museum proposed the construction of a bireme, which had been the most common vehicle in the northern Black Sea region since ancient times.

Expedition route 1989–94.

“The sea is an element that takes up a third of the world. Besides the blowing of the winds, it is enlivened by its own breathing, its own movement. Because at certain hours, day and night, a certain ripple, also called rheumatism, runs up and back again, floods the country like a river overflowing its banks and then flows back into its old depths. "

- Vegetius 4th book, chap. 42

Expedition route

Starting from Odessa (Ukraine) in 1989, Ivlia followed the routes of the old seafarers on the Black Sea and the Mediterranean as well as in the Atlantic . The Bireme sailed more than 3,000 nautical miles in six expeditions. During this time, the Ivlia visited 50 European cities and crossed all of Europe until it finally reached the river Seine and the French capital Paris as its final destination in 1994 . The international media published hundreds of articles about the Bireme's journey around Europe. The ship was regularly visited by official delegations and thousands of tourists. Ivlia also took part in international maritime festivals: “Colombo'92” ( Genoa , Italy), “ Brest '92”, “ Cancale '93”, “Vieux Greements'94” (France), the Bireme team included more than 200 Crew members - citizens of Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Moldova, France, Greece and Georgia .
