history
The dead of the Jewish communities in the area were initially buried in the Birstein Jewish Cemetery or the Gelnhausen Jewish Cemetery. In 1804, the Jewish communities of Aufenau and Wächtersbach, together with the Jews from Wittgenborn , Schlierbach and Hesseldorf , decided to create a joint cemetery in Aufenau. In 1841 the Jewish community in Orb also joined the cemetery association .
After the dissolution of the Jewish community in Aufenau, only the Jewish communities of Wächtersbach and Orb were the bearers of the cemetery. After the creation of a new Jewish cemetery in Bad Orb around 1932, only the Jewish community in Wächtersbach remained responsible for the cemetery. The last burial (Kätchen Loebenberg) at the Jewish cemetery in Aufenau took place in 1935.
During the Nazi era , the cemetery wall was torn down in 1939 and tombstones ( mazewot ) were overturned. In 1946, those who had contributed to the destruction had to erect the gravestones that had been turned down and plant a living hedge.
