Jürgen Arnold Henckell (born August 2, 1915 in Hamburg ; † August 4, 2007 in Stühlingen ) was a German painter , graphic artist , writer and cabaret artist .

biography

Jürgen Henckell's father Carl Justus worked for the Hamburger Sparkasse . Jürgen attended elementary school in Knauerstraße for four years and later the Oberrealschule in Eppendorf , where he graduated from the Obersekunda in 1932. In order to develop his drawing talent, he attended the Hanseatic University of Fine Arts from 1932 at the age of 16 . He studied graphics there until 1938 and was a student of Hugo Meier-Thur .

He interrupted his studies for a year and a half to take part in a military sports course in the Trittau camp. He did a year of voluntary labor service in Marne (Holstein) . In 1935 he continued his studies.

Jürgen Henckell was also active as a writer and musically. Even during his studies he received design commissions and a. from the Hamburg Senate and from the Wempe Chronometerwerke . Text jobs for cigarette advertising for gold dollars were added later. He also wrote and drew for the Hamburg press.

In addition to his studies and work, he already appeared as a cabaret artist in 1935 .

Services

After completing his studies, Jürgen, who had already successfully presented himself as a lecturer, worked with other artists in Hans Harbeck's literary cabaret “The Seven Sticklebacks”, Curiohaus , Hamburg. He also worked as a soloist with his own texts and compositions and finally took over the program management (full-time since October 1940) in Hamburg's literary cabaret "Bronzekeller" (until it was closed in 1943 by the police and the Gestapo ). Afterwards engagements and a. in Theo Prosels Munich “ Simpl ”, Adolf Gondrell's “Bonbonniere” and Karl Valentin's “Ritterspelunken” (which was directed by Hans Reintjes), where he finally also became a program designer and director. In 1943 Jürgen Henckell married Annedore Siemann. During this time he was on his cabaret tour of Silesia with the “Bonbonniere”, Munich, whose program management was entrusted to him by Adolf Gondrell. Henckell delighted the audience as a piano humorist, presenter and lyricist. In 1944, however, Munich was bombed out - so he went on tour for months from Munich to Blumberg in the Schwarzwald-Baar district ( Baden-Württemberg ), where he lived until his death.

Encouraged by the years of apprenticeship in the Munich “Bonbonniere”, Jürgen Henckell founded a guest performance director in Schwenningen in autumn 1945 immediately after the Second World War . He created the first southwest German travel cabaret tour on tours , which developed into the cabaret theater: Der Widerspiegel . The actors he engaged included Editha Stoll, Anna Frank, Gebhardt "Eddi" Arendt and Rolf Schimpf .

Painter, graphic artist, caricaturist

From 1967 Jürgen Henckell visited the island of Sicily almost every year , which was creatively decisive. This inspired him to create his novels “Weeds of Heaven” and “Awakening in the Twilight”. Then (from 1971) he began to paint and created his impressive Pierrags (stone paintings) and the Sicily Cycle (critical of time).

His works have been shown in solo exhibitions in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Singen ; as well as participations in exhibitions in Baden-Württemberg, Switzerland, Austria and France. Some of his works are owned by the federal government, the regional council of Freiburg , the city of Donaueschingen and art collectors in Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. He was entrusted with the graphic design of Blumberger advertising brochures; of posters, brochures and car stickers for the “ Wutachtal Museum Railway ” and for the logo of the Blumberg advertising association. Jürgen Henckell was also commissioned to design in and on public buildings, so he created large murals in the multi-purpose hall of Blumberg-Riedöschingen and a large wall design in the foyer of the Blumberg sports hall.

Volunteer work

In 1971 Jürgen became a founding member of the Artists' Guild in Donaueschingen and served there for several years as a committee member, juror and guild spokesman. He was also a member of the Kunstverein Konstanz. He was also involved in the Internationale Bodensee-Klub e. V., was there in 1975 and 1992 a member of the presidency and until the turn of the millennium head of the West section in the visual arts department. He also taught the VHS courses “Drawing and Painting” for several years .

From 1973 to 1992 Henckell designed around 1000 glossary drawings for the "Albboten", Waldshut. He often signed these with jühe , which was also his abbreviation for newspaper articles. From 1977 until shortly before the end of his life he was the organizer of regional and national Blumberg art exhibitions (the 25th in 2004) and was involved as a juror at numerous other exhibitions. For his active, often voluntary work for culture, Jürgen Henckell was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1995 by Federal President Roman Herzog .

From 1952 Jürgen Henckell concentrated on working as a freelance writer and graphic artist. Over 20 magazine and newspaper novels have been published. There were also several book novels. From 1962 he worked as a freelancer at Süddeutscher Rundfunk for radio play series.
