Jacek Duda (born July 3, 1963 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish national basketball player . After studying in the United States , Duda played as a professional player in the German basketball league , in which he became German champion in 1989 with Steiner Bayreuth . After the revolutions in 1989 he played again in his Polish homeland, for which he was again national player at the European Championship finals in 1991 . After several years with MTV 1846 Gießen, Duda ended his active career in 1998 with the then second division team TV 1860 Lich.

Career

Duda left his Polish homeland in 1982 and got a place at Providence College , where he studied from 1983 and played for the college team Friars in the then Big East Conference of the NCAA . In 1985, the then relatively unknown Rick Pitino , previously assistant coach at the New York Knicks in the NBA professional league , took over as coach of the team that qualified under him in 1986 for the National Invitation Tournament , the first participation in a major postseason tournament NCAA for the team for eight years. Here they were eliminated after a defeat with one point difference in the quarterfinals against the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech University . A year later, the Friars qualified again for the national NCAA finals , in which they very surprisingly defeated the Hoyas of Georgetown University at Pitino's later place of work in Louisville (Kentucky) and qualified for the prestigious Final Four tournament for the first time since 1973 . In the semifinals, however, the Friars had to admit defeat to the favored Orangemen of Syracuse University . During his time at Providence College, Duda also helped his compatriot Waldemar Sender to escape from beyond the " Iron Curtain ", which prompted his trainer Pitino to make the succinct saying: " It's the first steal Jacek has had in more than a year and a half . ”( NCAA-News : Basketball notes - Quotes of the week, German:“ This is the first steal Jacek had in the last year and a half. ”) The tall Duda, who was in the center position, wasn't exactly for known for his agility, which is why Pitino named a "drill" ( German exercise ) after him. His lack of athleticism then led to the fact that he did not get a contract in the highest endowed professional league NBA after finishing his studies.

Instead, Duda played from 1987 in the German basketball league, initially for the SSV Goldstar from Hagen . After a year, Duda moved to the cup winner BG Steiner from Bayreuth , who pursued more ambitious goals under coach Lester Habegger and in 1989 won the national double from championship and cup competition. After the revolutions in 1989 Duda played again in his Polish homeland for Polonia and Legia from his hometown Warsaw and Polonia from Przemyśl . During this time he was called back to the Polish national team and reached seventh place with her in his only final participation in the 1991 European basketball championship . In 1993 Duda returned to the German Bundesliga, where he played for MTV 1846 from Gießen , with whom he was initially eliminated three times in a row in the first play-off round for the championship. In the basketball Bundesliga 1996/97 the Giessen team missed the play-offs in tenth place and the now 34-year-old Duda then played another season in the 2nd basketball league 1997/98 for the Giessen cooperation partner TV 1860 from Lich who initially missed promotion in the relegation round with the first division. Then Duda ended his active career.

Others

Duda has both Polish and German citizenship .
