Jack Sarfatti (born September 14, 1939 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American theoretical physicist and author of popular works on quantum physics and consciousness . He is known for his iconoclastic ideas and shows great interest in what he sees as the current breakdown of the paradigm that separates the natural sciences and the humanities . One of his arguments is that physics , which he called the Conceptual Art of the late 20th Centurycalls, which has replaced philosophy as the unifying link between science and art .

Sarfatti's main interest, however, is SMI²LE , i.e. the colonization of the universe , the increase of our intelligence and the extension of life. His views include speculation about the fact that UFOs possibly of extraterrestrial origin or terrestrial time travelers from our own future might be; that parapsychological phenomena are real; that communication with superluminal might be possible; and that the long distances of space travel could be covered by deforming space-time .

He is a Usenet legend and also has his own website where he discusses his ideas.

His views are not accepted by most of the scientific community.

Academic background

Sarfatti was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was the son of Hyman Sarfatti, a Sephardi Jew originally from Macedonia , and his wife Mildred Sarfatti.

After graduating from high school in Flatbush in 1956, he studied physics at Cornell University , where he heard from Nobel Prize laureates Hans Bethe and Philip Morrison and made his bachelor's degree in 1960. His first published work, Quantum-Mechanical Correlation Theory of Electromagnetic Fields , appeared in the Italian journal Nuovo Cimento in 1963 .

In 1967 he received his Masters Degree (Diploma) in Physics from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) University of California, San Diego . In the same year the article The Goldstone Theorem in the Jahn-Teller Effect , co-authored with Marshal Stoneham , was published in the journal Proceedings of the Physical Society of London and the article Laser Self-Focusing Analogue to the Landau-Ginzburg Equation of Type II Superconductivity .

From 1967 to 1971 he taught physics at San Diego State University (where Fred Alan Wolf was his colleague) and received his doctorate in 1969 from Fred Cummings at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), whom he knew from a summer job at Ford Aeronutronics in 1963. In 1970 he published Cummings Beyond the Hartree-Fock Theory in Superfluid Helium in the journal "Physica Scripta".

1971–1972 he worked for David Bohm , known among other things for his investigations into the theory of hidden variables in quantum theory, at Birkbeck College in London .

1973–1974 he worked for the Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam in his International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste . He was also a visiting professor at the mathematics institute in UNICAMP in Brazil for a year.

In 1974 he founded the Physics-Consciousness Research Group and held regular courses and workshops at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur . From 1999-2000 he was with Joe Firmage's "ISSO exotic propulsion group" with a budget of several million US dollars .

Sarfatti and Uri Geller

On June 21, 1974, Sarfatti was involved with other scientists and other interested groups in observations dealing with Uri Geller .

Sarfatti was extremely impressed by Geller and commented on the events as follows: “My personal professional judgment, as a physicist and doctor of philosophy, is that Geller actually demonstrated reproducible psychoenergetic abilities under relatively well-controlled conditions that are beyond reproach. "

However, later, after discussing the events with James Randi , he revised his statements. In a letter he wrote: "On the basis of further experience in the field of conjuring, I would like to withdraw my confirmation of Uri Geller's psychoenergetic abilities."

About aliens

In 1975 Sarfatti stated in a letter to James Randi that he had "serious information about contacts by extraterrestrial beings". In the same year he published the book “Space-time and Beyond” together with two other authors in which he claimed that paraphysical events could be explained by “non-local quantum connections”.

About the speed of light

In 1978 Sarfatti patented a communication system that works faster than light . Martin Gardner commented: “I don't know any other physicist who thinks this system works. If it works, Jack Sarfatti would be one of the greatest physicists of all time ”. Sarfatti withdrew his support for this draft, stating that it would not work because it was based on an orthodox quantum theory that included the "no-cloning" theorem .

criticism

In a seminar held at the University of Campinas , the Brazilian mathematics professor Waldyr Rodrigues deals with the concepts and methods of Sarfatti. In A Comment on Emergent Gravity , edited by him , Rodrigues pointed to mathematical incompatibilities found in Sarfatti's Emergent Gravity: String Theory without String Theory and called it a "potpurri of nonsense mathematics" and he also found it in Sarfatti's later publications Error.
