Jaime Camacho Amaral

Jaime Camacho Amaral (born January 10, 1950 in Lia Oli, Baha Mori , Portuguese Timor , † December 23, 1975 in Iakoto, Laulara , East Timor ) was a freedom fighter from East Timor.

Career

Camacho was born the fifth of twelve children of Lourenço da Silva Guterres (Modolara) and Ana Maria Lino Ferreira (Lau-modo) . Jaime finished primary school and the first year at the Colégio de Venilale . He spent the second year at Sta. Teresina Colegio in Ossu . In 1966 Camacho continued to study at the Colégio in Fuiloro for a trimester. But then the school was closed. Camacho received a scholarship from the Salesians and was able to continue his studies from 1966 to 1969 in Macau and finally finish in 1970 at the Technical School of the Salesians in Fatumaca .

At the end of July 1971 Camacho began his military service with the Portuguese colonial army . He received his training at the Taibesi military base , after which he was stationed in Teolale from 1972 to 1974 . From 1974 to 1975 Camacho was the administrator of the Posto Luro . When the civil war broke out in East Timor in August 1975 , Camacho joined FALINTIL , the armed arm of FRETILIN . He became the commandant of the Taibesi Training Center.

On November 28, 1975 FRETILIN unilaterally declared independence from Portugal . Camacho was chosen to command the military parade for the independence celebrations. In the end, it was he who caught up with the flag of Portugal , which had been waving until then , at the governor's residence , where the flag of East Timor was then set.

On December 7, 1975, Indonesia attacked the East Timorese capital Dili , the beginning of the occupation of East Timor . Camacho took part in the defensive battle of the FALINTIL. On December 23, he shot Indonesian tanks with a bazooka in Iakoto near Laulara . The enemy saw the smoke from the launch and returned fire with a tank in Maraiba . Camacho was killed in the fire. His remains were buried with military honors by FALINTIL fighters in Seloi Malere that same day .

On January 11, 2019, a memorial service was held in the Dili Cathedral by Bishop Virgílio do Carmo da Silva in the presence of Gil da Costa Monteiro , Secretary of State for Veterans Affairs, in honor of Camacho . The exhumed, mortal remains were laid out before they were transferred to the state burial at the Heroes Cemetery in Metinaro .

Camacho left behind his wife Genoveva da Silva, two daughters and a son.

In 2018 Jaime Camacho Amaral was awarded the Ordem de Timor-Leste posthumously.
