Residences

The Rhenish Eltz Castle and its name were established in 1157 with a deed of donation from Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa as an imperial fiefdom to Rudolph (also: Rudolf) von Eltz . The castle has been in the continuous possession of the Eltz family for around 850 years. By family split in 1268 in the possession of living together at the castle three lines (Eltz -Kempenich the golden lion, Eltz -Rübenach from silver lion and Eltz -Rodendorf of the buffalo horns), the castle was until the early 19th century to a Ganerbenburg and a man fief . The Eltz family branch with the buffalo horns already went out in 1440, in 1815 Count Hugo Philipp zu Eltz-Kempenich bought the part of the Eltz-Rübenach family (line of the silver lion) that was still co-owners from the golden lion line. Since then, the property has been the sole property of the family, which was transferred to Jakob Graf zu Eltz in the 32nd generation via Hugo Philipp's grandson Friedrich Karl, and which he has kept open to the public. His first-born son, Karl Graf zu Eltz, is the current owner of Eltz Castle in the family line .

The main residence of the family has been the Eltzer Hof in Eltville am Rhein since 1945 , which is not open to the public. In 2016, the German Foundation for Monument Protection provided funds for the refurbishment of 14 historical windows and other work in the Eltzer Hof. The family plans to convert individual buildings in the courtyard into rental apartments in the following years.
