The Jakobskreuz is a lookout tower and at the same time an accessible summit cross on the Buchensteinwand , a prominent mountain near Fieberbrunn in the Kitzbühel district in the Austrian state of Tyrol . The 29.7 m high tower has the shape of an upright double cross and was built in 2014 by the Pillersee mountain railway.

Geographical location

The Jacob Cross is a highly visible landmark and one of the landmarks of the Pillerseetal on the 1,462  m above sea level. The establishment of the Jakobskreuz goes back to the initiative of three committed founding fathers from the region, who significantly pushed this project forward with reference to the Jakobsweg in the Pillerseetal . The building is a steel framework construction with four above-ground levels and two basement floors, the walls of which are clad with white wall panels on the inside and wooden shingles on the outside . Access is from the west side through a glazed extension with a turnstile. The Jakobskreuz has a centrally installed passenger elevator , with which one can get barrier-free from the ground floor to the basement and to level 2. Around the elevator shaft there is a left-hand staircase with a total of 159 numbered steps , which leads over several intermediate landings up to the top platform on the top of the Jakobskreuz.

After 9 + 8 steps, which are located on the south and east side of the elevator shaft, an L-shaped hallway follows along the north side to the west side and there to the next steps. Six turns around the elevator shaft are necessary to get to the second level at a height of 18.5 m, where there are four approximately 35 m² large viewing and exhibition rooms in the arms of the cross . These can be heated and have large glazing on the front . They are used for different occasions and offer a very good view of the surrounding mountains.

On their roof areas (3rd level) there are viewing platforms at a height of 21.4 m , which are named Pillersee , Stoaberg , Großglockner and Kitzbüheler Horn according to their orientation . A telescope is mounted on each of them , in which the sighting targets currently being targeted are identified by name. The further staircase to the top platform leads over an intermediate landing to a glass door and then over the last 16 steps to the outside. The upper panorama platform is 28.6 m high on the 4th level, corresponding to around 1480  m above sea level. A. and also offers a telescope.

From the entrance level of the Jakobskreuz, a staircase leads to the first basement in a glass porch built onto a terrace on the north side , where there are sanitary facilities. There is a storage room in the 2nd basement, which is accessible at ground level due to the incline on the north side.

Possibility of viewing

From the Jakobskreuz the view falls to the north into the Pillerseetal, to the northeast to the Loferer Steinberge and to the east to the Leoganger Steinberge . To the southeast is Hochfilzen to see the south Fieberbrunn and the mountains to the ski resort of Saalbach-Hinterglemm . In the distance, with good visibility, the main Alpine ridge with Großvenediger , Kitzsteinhorn and Großglockner can be seen. In the southwest are the Kitzbühel Alps , in the west the Kitzbüheler Horn near St. Johann in Tirol and further away in the west northwest the Kaiser Mountains . In the head of the cross there is a summit book on the level above the four viewing platforms.
