James Boyd (boxer)
James Felton "Jim" Boyd (* 30th November 1930 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina ; † 25. January 1997 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American boxer in the light heavyweight division (75 to 81 kg).
Boxing career
James Boyd joined the United States Army in 1947 and was stationed at Fort Benning , where he began boxing. In 1955 and 1956 he was All-Army and All-Service Champion and also won the National Golden Gloves in 1956 , where he defeated Ernie Terrell in the final.
At the 16th Summer Olympics in Melbourne in 1956 , he won the gold medal. He defeated the Argentine Rodolfo Luciano Díaz in the quarter-finals, Romualdas Murauskas from the Soviet Union in the semifinals and the Romanian Gheorghe Negrea in the final .
In 1959 he became a professional boxer and until September 1962 played seven fights, including two wins and three draws. He died in 1997 of complications from cancer .
