Janów Lubelski is a city in the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name and the Powiat Janowski .

The city center

history

Today's Janów Lubelski was first mentioned in 1245. The name at that time was Biała . As Biała, the village received on July 21, 1640 the city charter under Magdeburg law by King Władysław IV Wasa awarded. Included was the right to a weekly market on Monday and eight annual markets . In 1642 the name Janów was first used in your document. The name is derived from the personal name Jan and probably goes back to either Jan Sobiepan Zamoyski or Jan Zamoyski . In 1648 the city was destroyed by the troops of the Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj . In 1740, 1743 and 1754 Janów was destroyed by fires. At the first partition of Poland it came to Austria . In 1776 the city returned to the remaining little Poland before it fell again to Austria in the Third Partition of Poland . In 1809 Janów came to the newly formed Duchy of Warsaw and then in 1815 to Congress Poland . In 1860 there were two hotels, four inns, a pharmacy, twelve taverns and a primary school in the city. Through a general reform of the administration on Polish territory by the Russian tsar, Janów became a district seat in 1867. After the First World War , Janów became part of the re-established Poland . At the beginning of the Second World War , the city was bombed by the Wehrmacht air force and up to 85 percent destroyed. About 350 people were killed. After the occupation by the Germans, a labor camp was set up in 1940. With the support of the Armia Ludowa , the Red Army marched into Janów on July 26, 1944 . As a result of the war, the city became part of the People's Republic of Poland and in 1956 the seat of a powiat . Between 1975 and 1998 it was part of the Tarnobrzeg Voivodeship .

Population development

About 1,000 people lived in Janów in the second half of the 17th century. In the second half of the 18th century, the population had doubled to 2,000. In the middle of the 19th century the number of inhabitants had grown to 3,500. At the beginning of the 20th century the population had increased further, now 8,000 people lived in Janów. In June 2007, 11,971 people lived in Janów Lubelski.
