Jan Drees

Jan Drees (born May 9, 1979 in Haan ) is a German writer , journalist , presenter and former athlete . Since July 2016 he has been the literary editor at Deutschlandfunk .

Live and act

Until 2003, Drees started as an 800-meter runner for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He was the Junior European Cup winner in Ljubljana in 1996 and won eight medals at German championships between 1996 and 1999 . In 1997 he took first place in the U18 international competition in Frankfurt (Oder) , in 1998 he won the gold medal at the German indoor youth championships in Chemnitz over 800 meters.

After a traineeship at the German branch of the advertising agency BBDO , Drees studied - without a high school diploma, but with the help of a so-called gifted access - a. a. with Peter Matussek , Dirk Matejovski, Peter Trawny and Andreas Blödorn in Düsseldorf and Wuppertal, recent German literary studies , medieval studies , philosophy and communication studies . Drees then worked as a reviewer, columnist and author for radio, magazines and newspapers (Deutschlandfunk, FAZ, 1LIVE, Rolling Stone, Bayern 2 and others) and was a doctoral student at the Graduate School Practices of Literature in Münster.

In 2000 his novel Staring at the Sun was published by Diana Verlag, in 2007 a revised remix of the book was published, now in the Eichborn Verlag . Drees' second novel, Last Days, Now , was published in 2006 (also as an audio book, read in by Mirjam Weichselbraun ). In 2010 the literary study Rainald Goetz : Irre als System was published : Using Niklas Luhmann's theory , Goetz's razor blade cut at the 1983 Bachmann Prize in Klagenfurt is read as an immanent part of the novel. In 2011 Eichborn published the illustrated non-fiction book Cassette Deck: Soundtrack of a Generation by Drees and Christian Vorbau. Interview partners were a. Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre , Westbam , Smudo , Hans Nieswandt , Alexa Hennig von Lange and Peter Glaser . Part of the cassette deck is a 70-page short novel. In 2013 his story Tenerife was published by Sukultur- Verlag and the study Twitteratur - Digital Abbreviations in collaboration with Sandra Annika Meyer by Frohmann, in 2015 the story Lanzarote , also by Sukultur and Klagenfurt by Literatur Quickies, and in 2019 the novel Sandbergs Liebe by Secession Verlag für Literatur . The story about emotional abuse in a love relationship, narcissistic violence and gaslighting was awarded NDR Book of the Month . Melanie Mühl described the novel in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a "literary translation of the book Masken der Wickertracht by the psychoanalyst Marie-France Hirigoyen , published in France in 1998. "

Since April 2016, Drees has been one of the moderators of the literary program Büchermarkt on Deutschlandfunk. In July of the same year he succeeded Denis Scheck as literary editor.
