Jan Jarczyk

Jan Jarczyk (born October 7, 1947 in Krakow ; † August 3, 2014 in Montreal ) was a Polish jazz musician ( piano , trombone ) and a professor of jazz composition .

Life

Jarczyk graduated from the Krakow Music Academy. During this time he took lessons from Tomasz Stańko, among others, and at that time was a member of the Zbigniew Seifert quartet , with whom he also appeared on the Jazz Jamboree in 1969 . He received his bachelor's degree in pianist in 1970 and his master's degree in classical composition in Cracow in 1972. In two consecutive years, 1971 and 1972, he was awarded a year-round scholarship that goes hand in hand with the Polish Composers Association Award.

For several years he worked as a pianist, composer and arranger for the Polish Radio Jazz Orchestra. The results are also documented in a number of Polish jazz record albums. Jarczyk worked as a pianist, trombonist and arranger during his time in Poland with Zbigniew Namysłowski , Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski and Tomasz Stanko, among others . In 1974 he won the "Grand Prix du Concours d'Improvisation de piano jazz" at the competition in Lyon, France .

The "Summer Scholarship" scholarship at Berklee College of Music in 1976 led him to permanently emigrate to North America in 1977. Jarczyk graduated from Boston College in 1980. He then taught harmony and composition there from 1980–1985. In 1985 he was appointed professor of jazz studies to Canada, where he was head of the department (also known as "Schulich School of Music") at McGill University in Montreal (Canada) since 1986 and was extremely popular with his students recognized.

Jan Jarczyk's compositional work ranged from music with string quartet and jazz trio, quartet and quintet to large orchestras and film music on the one hand, piano solo on the other.

As a musician, he played with Leszek Zadlo , Janusz Stefański , Phil Wilson , Greg Hopkins , Tim Hagans , Donny McCaslin , Aaron Scott , Pat LaBarbera , Jan De Haas, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Michel Donato , Kevin Dean, Neil Swainson , Andre White, Dave Laing, Remi Bolduc.

John Jarczyk died on August 3, 2014 after suffering from cancer.
