Jan Kopp (composer)

Jan Kopp (born July 13, 1971 in Pforzheim ) is a German composer , musicologist and publicist . The focus of his artistic work is on contemporary compositions. He is a student of Wolfgang Rihm , Helmut Lachenmann and Marco Stroppa . In addition to creating and dealing with new music in articles and radio broadcasts, he is also interested in communicating it to a broad audience that goes beyond expert circles. He is therefore involved in numerous school projects.

Life

Jan Kopp was born on July 13, 1971 in Pforzheim, Baden. From 1982 he received private piano lessons, and in the same year he wrote his first self-taught compositions. In 1987, while still at school, he began studying composition with Wolfgang Rihm at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe . After high school and community service in 1991, he studied German, musicology and philosophy in Heidelberg from 1992 . From 1994 published first contributions for the SWF and other radio stations. In 1997 he continued his composition studies with Helmut Lachenmann . From 1998 to 2000 Kopp was project manager at KlangForum Heidelberg . In 2000 he completed his liberal arts studies with a master's thesis on the novel The Death of Virgil by Hermann Broch and then devoted himself to studying composition with Marco Stroppa at the Stuttgart Music Academy until 2002 . Since 2002 Kopp has lived as a freelance composer and music journalist in Stuttgart.

In 2003, Kopp went on a long trip to Argentina and Uruguay in South America to give lectures on contemporary European vocal music at the universities of Córdoba and Montevideo and the Conservatory Río Cuarto and to take part in performances in Córdoba and Río Cuarto.

Since 2002 Kopp has led various composition projects with students, a. a. 2002 and 2004 at the German Student Academy (DSA) . In 2005 he had a teaching position at the University of Heidelberg . Since 2006 he has been a regular lecturer at the workshop " Youth composes Baden-Württemberg ". He also teaches composition privately.

Performances

Kopp's compositions have been performed at various festivals at home and abroad. a. at the " Darmstädter Ferienkurse ", at the " Heidelberger Frühling ", at " Eclat ", the " Weimarer Spring Days for Contemporary Music ", the " MaerzMusik ", the "Klangwerkstatt Berlin", the "Daegu Contemporary Music Universiade" (South Korea), the " Days for New Music Zurich ", the " ATEMPO " festival (Venezuela) and the " Núcleo Música Nueva " (Uruguay). Composition orders were given to him. a. from the Stuttgart State Theater , the Siemens Arts Program , the SWR and the orchestra of the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Prices

Kopp has received several awards for his compositions, for example in 1995 with the German Piano Industry Prize for "Klangschatten / Schwarzer Block" and in 2002 with the First Prize of the "Weimar Spring Days for New Music" for the "Akhmatova Madrigal", which was also awarded in 2004 by the GNM was proposed for the World Music Days in Zagreb, as well as with an invitation to the 7th Young Talent Forum of the Ensemble Modern for "Achmatowa-Lied". He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation (1994-98), the Darmstadt Summer Courses (1998), the Mozart Foundation Frankfurt / Main (2000/2001), the Heinrich Strobel Foundation of the SWR (2006), the Art Foundation Baden- Württemberg (2006) and the Bartels Foundation Basel (2010).
