Jason Smilovic (born 1974 in New York ) is an American screenwriter .

Life

Smilovic grew up in Bellmore , New York . There he attended John F. Kennedy High School and then until 1994 the Buffalo State College . After a year living on unemployment benefits in New York and watching two films a day, he studied political theory and political philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, from 1995 . After graduating in 1997, he implemented his decision to become a screenwriter, which had matured in the meantime, and wrote his first script with Lucky Number Slevin . However, it took eight years after that until his first film was made into a film under the direction of Paul McGuigan . The thriller received mixed reviews, but was able to recoup its production costs.

In the meantime, Smilovic was working for television. For ABC he developed the series Karen Sisco based on themes from the novel Out of Sight by Elmore Leonard and the film of the same name by Steven Soderbergh . After Karen Sisco was discontinued after seven episodes in 2003, he developed the series Kidnapped , which in 2006 had five episodes on NBC . The following year he signed a multi- million dollar development and production contract with NBC Universal , in the context of which he initially worked as executive producer of the television series Bionic Woman , which was canceled after eight episodes due to the WGA strike. In the series My Own Worst Enemy , which was then developed by Smilovic, there were creative differences with NBC during the filming of the pilot episode; this project too ultimately proved to be short-lived and was discontinued in 2008 after only nine episodes. For the time travel drama Murmurs , CBS commissioned a script for the pilot episode in 2009, but the series never materialized.

As a result, Smilovic turned back to work on cinema scripts. For Warner Bros. , he wrote a new version of the screenplay Replay (based on the novel of the same name by Ken Grimwood ) in 2010 , with which Ben Affleck and later Robert Zemeckis should be won as directors. The following year Warner Bros. bought his screenplay idea The Architect , a thriller about an art thief and his pursuer in Europe in the 1840s.

His next actual script was Arms and the Dudes for director and producer Todd Phillips in 2014 . The script is based on a 2011 article by Guy Lawson in Rolling Stone (and a book version announced for 2015) about young Florida stoners turning into arms dealers. One of the leading roles was cast with Jonah Hill ; Filming began in February 2015. War Dogs was released in August 2016.

In early 2015, Smilovic was hired by New Regency to write the script for The Crowded Room together with Todd Katzberg . The story is based on the 1981 documentary book The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes . It tells the story of Milligan, who suffered from dissociative identity disorder and successfully used his multiple personalities as a defense strategy in court. Leonardo DiCaprio is interested in the lead role in the film.

Smilovic lives in Beverly Hills .
