Jay Berliner (* 24. May 1940 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American guitarist of classical music , which is also in the upscale light music and modern jazz has emerged. He also plays the mandolin , ukulele and banjo .

Life

In 1947, Berliner had his first television appearance on The Children's Hour with his sister Eve . After studying at the Eastman School of Music , he worked for many years in the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera . Under his own name he recorded albums such as Bananas Are Not Created Equal, Romantic Guitars, Erotic Guitars, (for Columbia) and classical repertoire (for Spanish Music Center).

He also accompanied Harry Belafonte in the early 1960s , was with him and Miriam Makeba in Kenya in 1963 and toured Japan on his own . He is a member of Rob Fishers Coffee Club Orchestra and is also part of Guys All-Star Shoe Band from Garrison Keillors A Prairie Home Companion . He performed with William Warfield and Earl Wild as well as with Andre Velis and Charles Bressler. In recent years he has also appeared on stage with Barbara Cook, Audra McDonald , Josh Groban , Elaine Strich and Van Morrison .

Berliner worked intensively as a studio musician. He played on albums by Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra , Perry Como , Astrud Gilberto , Sammy Davis junior , Rupert Holmes , Frankie Valli , Debby Boone , Andrea Bocelli , Russell Watson , Harry Connick , Bernadette Peters , Blossom Dearie , Eartha Kitt , Bette Midler and LaTanya Hall. In 1968 he was in the studio with Van Morrison to record his legendary album Astral Weeks . In the field of jazz he is on recordings by Charles Mingus (especially The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady ), Stéphane Grappelli ( Uptown Dance ), Ron Carter , George Benson ( White Rabbit ), Milt Jackson ( Sunflower ), on Eumir Deodatos Also sprach Zarathustra and other productions by Creed Taylor as well as with Don Byron , Barbara Carroll and John Pizzarelli , also with Manhattan Transfer .

Prizes and awards

Berliner won the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' Most Valuable Player Award for Best Acoustic Guitar Player for five years in a row .
