Jean Vincent de Crozals (born August 8, 1922 in Toulouse , † August 9, 2009 in Antibes ) was a French sculptor and painter. His sculptures and pictures are the subject of numerous state and church commissions and are in private collections in France and abroad.

biography

Jean Vincent de Crozals was born in Toulouse on August 8, 1922. After childhood in southern France and Tunisia, where he also did his military service as part of the Tunisian campaign (Campagne de Tunisie, 1942/1943), the autodidact settled in Vence at the end of 1945 to work as an artist.

Here he met his first wife Annelies Nelck (1925–2014), who also worked as a painter under the stage name "Anatole".

In 1949, the artist Henri Matisse asked Jean Vincent de Crozals to model him for the drawings of Christ in the Rosary Chapel (Chapelle du Rosaire) in Vence. With his slim body, dull skin and passionate fine facial features, de Crozals was predestined for this task. Because he was very religious and possessed extraordinary intuition, he could easily identify with anything that touched him strongly, and Matisse recognized this quickly.

Henri Matisse and Henri Laurens , whom he met through Matisse, made a great impression on the artist and had a major influence on his work. A phase in which de Crozals mainly created sculptures out of wood and clay is followed by a longer period in which galvanized iron and aluminum were among his preferred materials.

The artist Marc Chagall hired Jean Vincent de Crozals from 1950 to 1951 in Vence for the realization of various ceramic works.

From 1958 to 1971 Jean Vincent de Crozals regularly realized sculptures and paintings for the artist Jean Dubuffet in Paris and forged a close friendship with him, accompanied by an intensive exchange of ideas about art and her personal conception of art. In 1964, Jean Dubuffet invited Jean Vincent de Crozals to become a member of the Compagnie de l'art brut , chaired by Dubuffet.

In 1974 Jean Vincent de Crozals settled in the municipality of Nörvenich in Germany with his second wife Hannelore Micknass and his two sons Cyrille and Jean Marie de Crozals. After working primarily with clay, wood, stone, iron and aluminum in Vence, a new phase began for the artist with a focus on bronze and paper mache.

Villa Gaudissart, home and studio of the artist Jean Vincent de Crozals in Vence 1960

Due to his very close connection to the south of France, Jean Vincent de Crozals traveled regularly to his second home in Vence to work as an artist in his studio and to organize exhibitions of his works in France. Towards the end of his days, de Crozals returned permanently to Vence.

According to his wishes, the ashes of Jean Vincent de Crozals were scattered at the foot of a sea pine in the "jardin du souvenir" of the crematorium in Nice.

Works

The materials used by Jean Vincent de Crozals for his sculptures are clay, wood, stone, reinforced concrete, iron, copper, aluminum, bronze and paper mache. The artist uses gouache and china ink for his pictures.

Jean Vincent de Crozals explains his work as follows: “In my work, nature and time play an important role; one can understand my sculptures as leftover signs that have withstood a long process of erosion. In my work I try to make visible the original rhythms and deep-lying structures of natural forms that have spared erosion and wind and to convey the distant origin of things to the viewer ... "

The works of Jean Vincent de Crozals are often the subject of state and church commissions and can be found in the Center Pompidou in Paris, in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and in the Cathedral of Vence as well as in numerous private collections in France, Germany, Sweden, UK and USA.
