Jeanne de Marle

Jeanne de Marle (also Jeanne de Bar , * 1415 ; † 14 May 1462 ) was Comtesse de Marle et de Soissons , Vicomtesse de Meaux through her mother, Comtesse de Saint-Pol through her marriage, as well as Dame de Condé , Dunkerque , Bourbourg , Gravelines etc. She was the only daughter of Robert von Bar , Count of Marle and Soissons, and Jeanne de Béthune .

Her father died at the Battle of Azincourt the year she was born . Her mother entered into her second marriage in 1418 with Jean II. De Luxembourg Count von Ligny . A few years earlier, her father had renounced the Duchy of Bar , but made it a condition that, if Edward III. and Ludwig von Bar , the two sons of Duke Robert I should die without male heirs, he allowed himself to pursue the succession. Edward III. fell in 1415 in the battle of Azincourt and Ludwig, who was intended for a career in the Church (he became bishop and cardinal) remained single, but appointed his great-nephew René d'Anjou as his successor . Jeanne de Marle then decided to claim the Barrois for herself.

There was another dispute between Jean de Luxembourg and René d'Anjou over ownership of the county of Guise . Jean de Luxembourg had his claim to Guise confirmed by John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford , then attacked the castle and took it in 1425. A final agreement was not reached until 1433: in return for Jeanne de Marle's renunciation of the Barrois, René renounced the county of Guise. In the same year Pierre de Luxembourg , Count of Saint-Pol and brother of Jean de Luxembourg, died; he left a 15-year-old son, Louis de Luxembourg (1418-1475), to whose guardian Jean made himself. Since Jean de Luxembourg had no sons himself, he appointed Louis as his successor and arranged the marriage between Louis and Jeanne de Marle.

The marriage was concluded on July 16, 1435. The children of Louis and Jeanne are:
