Jens Glüsing

Jens Glüsing (born December 1, 1960 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist and since 1991 a correspondent for the news magazine Der Spiegel in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . Glüsing is considered to be a recognized expert on the political and socio-economic structures of Brazil and South America for many years .

Life

Growing up in Hamburg, Jens Glüsing studied political science (diploma thesis “Democratization in Argentina from 1983”) and the Spanish language at the University of Hamburg (1981–1987). He then graduated from the Henri Nannen School (Hamburg School of Journalism Gruner + Jahr ) and also joined Die Zeit GmbH from 1988 to 1989. His interest was Latin America from the start; Glüsing traveled a lot through this continent after completing his studies, while working as a client for various German media, including a. for Die Zeit and the Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ). However, he gained his first journalistic experience as a freelancer for the Hamburger Abendblatt .

From 1990 to 1991 Glüsing started his career as an editor in the foreign department of Spiegel; since 1991 he has been a permanent correspondent for Latin America based in Rio de Janeiro. During this time, Glüsing had numerous opportunities to interview South American heads of state. In the early 1990s he traveled a lot in Central America and Mexico , reporting on the peace processes in El Salvador and Guatemala and on the Zapatista uprising for Der Spiegel.

A feature brought him increased attention in 1999 when he was allowed to report on an expedition by the Brazilian Indian authority FUNAI to an isolated Indian tribe in the border area with Peru .

Private

In his private life he deals a lot with jazz . He had a special "mission" as a journalist in 2011 on the occasion of a concert by Keith Jarrett in Rio de Janeiro, about which he wrote on Spiegel Online . He is married to a Brazilian woman and lives in the Urca district of Rio de Janeiro.

Publications and Awards

Jens Glüsing had two book publications so far, "Das Guayana-Projekt", published by Christoph-Links-Verlag Berlin in 2008; and “Brazil - a country customer”, also published in 2013 by the same publisher. Glüsing received Brazil's most important journalism award, the “Prêmio Embratel”, in the “Foreign Correspondents” category. The jury of journalists and media experts honored his contribution, published in issue 16/2005 under the title “Cloud of Secrets”, about dubious investments by Russian millionaires in the first division soccer club Corinthians São Paulo . The prize is endowed with the equivalent of three thousand euros.
