Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe (born August 4, 1945 in Tunbridge Wells ) is a British painter of the post-painting abstraction movement (also: New Abstraction ), educator, art critic and theorist. His work has been exhibited in the Albright-Knox Gallery of Art in Buffalo , New York ; Exhibited at Getty, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and Miami , the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation in Los Angeles and Minneapolis .

Life

Gilbert-Rolfe was born in Tunbridge Wells, a town in the west of the English county of Kent . There he attended the Tunbridge Wells School of Art in 1965. He then studied until 1967 at the Institute of Education at London University and then until 1970 at Florida State University in Tallahassee , where he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts . While still studying in Florida, he took up a teaching position, which he started in 1972 at Princeton University , from 1978 at the New York Parsons School of Design , from 1980 at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia and from 1986 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena continued. At the Art Center he headed the Graduate Art Program until 2014.

Since the 1970s he has been active as a representative of minimalist and post-minimalist painting. In 1976/77 he was one of the editors of the art magazine October and continued to work as an art critic for magazines such as Artforum and ArtsMag. He has authored several books and anthologies, including Beauty and the Contemporary Sublime (Allworth Press, 2000) and Beyond Piety: Critical Essays on the Visual Arts 1986–1993 ( Cambridge University Press, 1995).

Awards

Gilbert-Rolfe has received research credits and contributions to his works and reviews from the National Endowment for the Arts . He also received the Guggenheim Fellowship in the Art category. In 1998 he received the College Art Association's Frank Jewett Mather Award for criticism.
