Jerry Ray Norton (born May 17, 1931 in Gilmer , Texas , † January 14, 2020 in Dallas ) was an American American football player in the National Football League (NFL). Among other things, he played as a halfback for the Philadelphia Eagles .

youth

Jerry Norton visited in Texarkana the high school and was already on the school a successful football player. In 1948 he was able to gain a space of 1,398 yards in the running game and one of 600 yards with a passing game . He was elected to the Texas state selection in both 1948 and 1949.

Player career

College career

After graduating from high school, Jerry Norton studied on a scholarship at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he played from 1950 to 1953 first as a defensive back and in his last two years as tailback and punter college football for the SMU Mustangs . In 1954 he played in the East-West Shrine Game and the Chicago College All-Star Game . In the latter game, the best college players in the country faced the reigning NFL runner-up Detroit Lions , who prevailed 31: 6.

Professional career

In 1954 Jerry Norton was from the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round at # 81 out drafted . With the team from Philadelphia he was used in various positions. Until the 1958 season he was in the squad of the Eagles and was then given in exchange for two players to the Chicago Cardinals , which moved to St. Louis after the 1959 season . Norton received at the Cardinals mostly playing time as a defensive back and stayed with the team until the 1961 season , before moving to the Dallas Cowboys supervised by Tom Landry . In 1962 he switched to reigning NFL champions Green Bay Packers . There he was mainly used as a punter by head coach Vince Lombardi . In 1963 he failed with his team just before reaching the final. The Packers in whose ranks there were numerous players who were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after their careers , such as the quarterback Bart Starr or the linebacker Ray Nitschke , were able to win eleven of 14 games in the regular season this year . However, this performance was not sufficient to qualify for the final. After the 1964 game round , Jerry Norton ended his career. During his career, Norton set three NFL annual bests. In 1957 he succeeded in a game against the New York Giants an interception , which he carried over a distance of 99 yards to a touchdown in the end zone of the Giants. However, the game was lost at 20:24. As a player in the St. Louis Cardinals , he was able to intercept ten passes from opposing quarterbacks in the 1960 season . A year later he got two touchdowns from seven interceptions.

Honors

Jerry Norton was voted All Pro four times and played in the Pro Bowl five times . In 2007, he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame .
