Jerry Williams (born January 2, 1979 in New Jersey ) is a retired American basketball player . Williams celebrated his greatest successes as a professional player in the British Basketball League (BBL), where he was named " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the BBL season in 2004. In 2006 he returned to his native Jacksonville , Florida , where he became assistant coach of the " Minor League " team Giants in the ABA after the end of his active career in 2010 . His younger brother is former NFL professional Rashean Mathis .

Career

Williams received an athletic scholarship from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina for his performance as an American football and basketball player in high school . For the basketball team of the Bulldogs there are no appearances for him and Williams moved in 1999 to the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg (Kentucky) , whose university teams Patriots are organized in the NAIA . Although the Patriots won no titles in their NAIA conference, they were invited to the national finals in 2001, where they were eliminated in the first round, and Williams as player of the year in his conference among the top five players of the NAIA for the 2000/01 season elected. In 2013 Williams was inducted into the "Athletic Hall of Fame" ( German  sports hall of fame ) of his university for his individual achievements in the jersey of the Patriots . After completing his studies, Williams tried in 2002 through the summer league United States Basketball League (USBL) for a professional career as a basketball player to be recommended.

Chris Finch as coach of the Sharks from Sheffield signed Williams for his team in the British Basketball League (BBL). The regular season of the BBL 2003 was finished first, but then lost in the semi-finals of the play-offs against eventual title winners Scottish Rocks. Williams himself has now been signed by the Rocks from Glasgow for the 2003/04 season, in which he was voted " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the season. In the cup competition BBL Cup they lost the final to Williams' former team Sharks, while the semi-finals in the League Cup BBL Trophy against Chester Jets lost. As fourth in the main round you lost in the play-offs as defending champions the first round encounter with the Jets, which later lost the final against the Sharks. In the 2004/05 season Williams played for the Towers from London , which reached third place in the regular season, but were defeated in the first play-off round against Williams' former team Rocks by two points. For the season 2005/06 Williams initially got a contract in the first French league LNB Pro A with the club Jeanne d'Arc from Dijon , which was dissolved after four missions. Williams returned to the BBL and played for the Brighton Bears , who also used former NBA All-Star Dennis Rodman as a guest player during the season . At the end of the season, the Bears were just able to qualify in eighth place for the play-offs and were eliminated in the first round against the Newcastle Eagles, who dominated that season . Williams also took on engagements in other leagues, so he is said to have played professionally in Tunisia .

2006 Williams played again in his American homeland Jacksonville for the JAM in the ABA , which could win their division in the ABA. The Jam then switched to the “Premier Basketball League” as SLAM, where they were discontinued in 2008 after financial difficulties. Williams played in Mexico and for a Texas ABA team before returning to Jacksonville in 2010. Williams played for the Blue Waves of the World Basketball Association (WBA) under coach Kevin Waters, whom he also served as an assistant on the sidelines after a stubborn knee injury. After Waters coach of the new ABA franchise Giants in Jacksonville, he took Williams on to his coaching staff. In the Giants, who were ABA champions in 2012, Williams is occasionally used as a substitute player.
