Jesse Feras Klaver (born May 1, 1986 in Roosendaal , Netherlands ) is a Dutch politician from the GroenLinks party . He has been a member of the Second Chamber of the States General since 2010 and Chairman of GroenLinks since May 12, 2015. Before that he was chairman of the youth organization of the trade union federation Christelijk Nationaal Vakverbond .

Life

Jesse Feras Klaver was born on May 1st, 1986 in Roosendaal , his father had a Moroccan , his mother a Dutch and Indonesian background. His grandparents played a huge role in his upbringing. Between 1999 and 2004 he obtained the Vmbo at the Waldorf School "Michael College" in Prinsenbeek.

Between 2006 and 2009 he was on the board of DWARS , the youth organization of GroenLinks , first he was vice-chairman, then secretary and finally chairman . As chairman he supported the “freedom-loving course of chairwoman Femke Halsema ” against the more communitarian parts of the party. In addition to this activity, he studied social work at the Avans School of international Studies and took part in a transition program in order to be able to do a Masters in Political Science at the Universiteit van Amsterdam . He ended this program early.

On September 17th, 2009 he was elected chairman of the youth organization of the CNV. As chairman he tried to put less emphasis on the Christian character of the CNV. He supported raising the retirement age to 67. On December 1, 2009, he became a member of the Sociaal-Economische Raad , at the age of 23 he was the youngest member of this council. In addition to his chairmanship of the CNV youth organization, he contributed to the GroenLinks election program in 2010; he was a member of the Christelijk Sociaal Jongerencongres and founder of the climate NGO Youth Copenhagen Coalition.

Political career

In the 2010 general election , Klaver came seventh on the GroenLinks list to get a seat in the Second Chamber, as the party received 10 seats, and he became a spokesman for social issues, work, education and sport.

In 2010 he was nominated "Political Talent of the Year" by political journalists. In the 2012 election , Klaver led the GroenLinks campaign team and finished fourth on the list. This was enough for another parliamentary term, as GroenLinks got exactly four seats.

In 2013, together with Lutz Jacobi ( PvdA ) and Stientje van Veldhoven ( D66 ), he was the author of the memorandum “Mooi Nederland” (“Beautiful Netherlands”), which aimed to protect nature, landscape, flora and fauna. Klaver achieved international attention with his resistance to tax avoidance in 2013.

On May 12, 2015, the then party chairman Bram van Ojik announced that Klaver would act as group chairman with immediate effect and later also take over the chairmanship of the party. Until then, Klaver was the spokesperson for finance, agriculture, nature, animal welfare, education, culture and science. He is a member of the parliamentary committees for foreign affairs, defense, European affairs, economy, finance, education, culture and science, budget, social affairs and labor as well as health, welfare and sport. Often referred to as "the Dutch Trudeau, " he is a big fan of former American President Barack Obama .

In the 2017 general election , he got the most votes in his party as the list leader, and GroenLinks achieved the best result ever with 14 seats (9.1% of the vote). Klaver was a guest at the 2017 federal party conference of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and gave a guest speech.

Klaver has been married since May 3, 2013 and has two sons.
