Yevgeny Zamyatin ( Russian Евгений Иванович Замятин ., Scientific transliteration Evgenij Ivanovič Zamjatin * January 20 . Jul / 1. February  1884 greg. In Lebedyan ; † 10. March 1937 in Paris ) was a Russian revolutionary and writer.

During his studies as a shipbuilding engineer in Saint Petersburg , he joined the Bolsheviks . He agitated for the party, helped organize the uprising on the battleship Potemkin and, after having returned to Russia after the February Revolution in 1917 , actively participated in the October Revolution .

According to Wolfgang Kasack "sobered" him "with the reality of their power, the primacy of reason and the denial of the spiritual life" . In 1920 he described in the novel We a fictional society in which all individuality was suppressed. Zamyatin incurred the displeasure of the party leadership because of the indirect criticism of the Soviet society, which was being established, and was banned from writing.

The novel Wir was published in various languages ​​abroad in 1924/25. The complete Russian version of the work was only published in the Soviet Union in 1988 . In addition to We , Zamyatin also published various fairy tales ( Der Gott , fairy tales about Fita, etc.). In 1929, after the worst agitation against him, Zamyatin, who had refused to leave the country at the beginning of the 1920s (he had an exit visa), left the Soviet Writers' Union. In 1931 he received Stalin's permission to travel to France through Maxim Gorky . Zamyatin retained Soviet citizenship until the end of his life. He died in Paris in 1937 and is buried in the Thiais cemetery.

Later novels by other authors such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley , 1984 by George Orwell , Anthem by Ayn Rand , No - The World of the Defendants by Walter Jens and in some cases Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury have many similarities with Zamyatin's We .
