history

The show began on January 26, 2003, replacing the show Politically Incorrect ; ABC originally intended to give Jon Stewart its own late night show after Nightline, but Kimmel was selected instead. The show fell in the ratings behind The Late Show with David Letterman , The Tonight Show , Late Night with Conan O'Brien , and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn . In 2004 the ratings rose by more than half, which saved Jimmy Kimmel Live from being canceled.

Contributors

The show's house band is Cleto and the Cletones , led by Cleto Escobedo III, a childhood friend of Kimmel 's.

"Uncle Frank" Potenza, a real uncle of Kimmel, served as a security guard for the show. He appeared regularly in articles by Jimmy Kimmel. Before joining Jimmy Kimmel Live! Frank Potenza was a New York City police officer and bodyguard of Frank Sinatra . Due to an illness, Potenza stopped appearing regularly from 2009 and stopped at all from 2010. Potenza passed away in August 2011 during the summer break from Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the first broadcast after that was dedicated to Jimmy Kimmel to his uncle. The episode was named Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tribute to Uncle Frank .

Potenza was replaced by Guillermo Rodriguez, who was already a parking lot attendant. Since then, Guillermo has "guarded" the studio and thus represents Kimmel's sidekick . He also appears in numerous clips, e. B. Commercial parodies and interviews with movie stars.

In addition, Kimmel's cousin Sal Iacono appears regularly on the show, who mainly works as an outside reporter.

Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon

In each edition of his show, Kimmel invites one or two prominent talk guests who come from all areas of public life.

One of the show's running gags was to end some programs with the words "Apologies to Matt Damon , we ran out of time" ("Sorry Matt Damon, we don't have any more time"). This indicates that Matt Damon was planned to be a guest on the show, but the time is up and he can no longer perform. In fact, Matt Damon's appearance was never planned. The writers of the show had tried in vain for three years to invite Damon because he was supposedly too fine to appear on a show with relatively unknown people.

In one edition of the show, Matt Damon actually appears at the end, but after a detailed introduction to the guest by Jimmy Kimmel, the time is again too short and the appearance has to be ended. This caused Damon to violently abuse the moderator. However, the contribution was previously agreed and can be seen as a video on the Internet.

Sarah Silverman's video "I'm fucking Matt Damon" , which was popular in early 2008 and pretends to have an affair with Matt Damon , also emerged from the running gag . The irony of this music video is the fact that Sarah Silverman is Jimmy Kimmel's long-time partner, and Matt Damon himself starred in the video.

In response to this video, Jimmy Kimmel produced his own music clip in February 2008, in which he pretended to be having an affair with Ben Affleck . This video ( “I'm fucking Ben Affleck” ) also achieved great popularity on abc.com and YouTube within a short period of time . What made it special were the guest appearances of many stars ( Robin Williams , Don Cheadle , Harrison Ford , Brad Pitt , Cameron Diaz , Christina Applegate , Rebecca Romijn , Benji Madden , Joel Madden , Dicky Barrett , Christopher Mintz-Plasse , Lance Bass , Dominic Monaghan , Meat Loaf , Pete Wentz , Joan Jett , Huey Lewis , Perry Farrell , Macy Gray and Josh Groban ) and Ben Affleck himself.

The two videos became very popular on video portals such as YouTube within a very short time . The video I'm fucking Matt Damon even won two Emmy Awards in September 2008 .

On January 24, 2013, Matt Damon hosted an edition of the show. The guests included: Ben Affleck, Sarah Silverman, Sheryl Crow , Reese Witherspoon , Amy Adams , Andy García , Nicole Kidman , Gary Oldman , Demi Moore and Robin Williams.

Matt Damon has appeared on the show since then. Mostly in the form of sketches, which mostly address his efforts to finally appear on the show.
