Joachim Albrecht Leo Eggeling (born November 30, 1884 in Blankenburg (Harz) , † April 15, 1945 in Halle (Saale) ) was NSDAP Gauleiter of Halle-Merseburg and the only senior president of the Prussian province of Halle-Merseburg .

Life

The son of a farmer visited to 1898, the public school and the high school in Blankenburg and was from 1898 to 1904 the military academy Castle Oranienstein and the Prussian Hauptkadettenanstalt in Gross-Lichterfelde . In March 1904 he resigned as infantry - lieutenant in the Prussian Army . He returned from the First World War as a highly decorated captain in November 1918 and was discharged from the army in October 1919 .

Eggeling began an apprenticeship as a farmer and inspector and completed a degree at the Agricultural University in Halle (Saale) . In November 1922 he took over the Frose domain in Anhalt .

On July 29, 1925, he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 11,579) and one year later became an advisor to the Gauleiter on all questions relating to agriculture. Within the Reichsnährstand , founded in 1933, he was the state farmer leader of the state farmers' association of Saxony-Anhalt (responsible for the province of Saxony and the Free State of Anhalt ). In November 1933 he entered the Reichstag for constituency 10 (Magdeburg) .

After the death of the Gauleiter in the Gau Magdeburg-Anhalt , Wilhelm Friedrich Loeper , on October 23, 1935, Eggeling was entrusted with the management of the Gau business as deputy Gauleiter from November 1935 and was therefore on leave in February 1936 as a state farmer's leader. On June 9, 1936, he joined the SS (membership number 186.515) and received the rank of SS Brigade Leader . According to the deputy regulation , according to which a deputy Gauleiter could not be appointed Gauleiter in the same Gau, Adolf Hitler appointed Eggeling on April 20, 1937 as Gauleiter of Halle-Merseburg as the successor to Rudolf Jordan , who moved to Dessau (Gau capital). With his appointment as Gauleiter, Eggeling was also promoted to the Prussian State Council and on April 20, 1937 to SS-Gruppenführer .

From 1939 he was the representative of the Reich Defense Commissioner (RVK) for military district IV (Halle-Merseburg); from 1942 - after the reorganization of the Reich defense districts - he himself acted as RVK. On June 21, 1943 Eggeling was promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer and on August 18, 1944, was appointed President of Halle-Merseburg. In the same year he received a donation of 100,000 Reichsmarks from Hitler . As part of the celebration of Nietzsche's 100th birthday in October 1944, Hitler commissioned Eggeling to lay a wreath for him at Nietzsche's grave in Röcken near Leipzig.

On April 13, 1945 he drove to the burning Berlin in full party uniform to talk to Hitler. Back in Halle Eggeling tries to persuade combat commander Lieutenant General Anton Radtke to surrender. He shot himself on April 15, 1945 in the Moritzburg in Halle.
