Joachim Goldbach

Joachim Goldbach (born December 8, 1929 in Cossebaude near Dresden , † September 29, 2008 in Strausberg ) was a German colonel general. He was Deputy Minister for National Defense in the Council of Ministers of the GDR and most recently chief technology / armament of the National People's Army .

The son of a commercial employee attended elementary and high school from 1936 to 1945. At the end of the war he was drafted into the Volkssturm .

After the war he became a member of an anti-fascist youth committee and in 1946 the FDJ . From 1945 to 1948 he learned the trade of a carpenter . After completing his apprenticeship, he worked in the profession until 1949 and was then briefly economic manager in a pioneer camp . On October 27, 1949, Goldbach joined the armed organs of the GDR and was a candidate for VP in the barracked police station in Grossenhain .

He joined the SED in 1951. After completing his studies at a military academy in the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1956, Goldbach served in various positions in the 7th Panzer Division (Dresden) until 1964 . 1960 to 1964 he was the commander of this association. From 1964 to 1966 Joachim Goldbach studied at the General Staff Academy of the USSR . After graduating with a degree in military science, he was promoted to major general on October 7, 1966 . He was in command of the 4th motorized rifle division in Erfurt from October 1966 to August 1969. From 1972 to 1979 he was chief of the military district V ( Neubrandenburg ). In this position Goldbach was promoted to Lieutenant General on October 7, 1974 . In 1979 he moved to the Ministry of National Defense. After the death of Lieutenant General Helmut Poppe, he worked there from 1979 to 1986 as Deputy Minister and Head of Rear Services . On February 1, 1986 Goldbach changed to the position of chief for technology and armament as the successor to the late Colonel General Werner Fleißner . On the 30th anniversary of the founding of the NVA, on March 1, 1986, he was promoted to Colonel General . In autumn 1989 Goldbach was the first general to oppose Heinz Keßler's instructions to use the NVA against demonstrators in civil unrest.

In the Ministry of disarmament and defense was Joachim Goldbach from 18 April 1990 Head of the Office for Technology, disarmament and conversion.

On September 30, 1990 he was given early retirement and last lived as a pensioner in Strausberg.

Condemnation in the wall rifle trials

Joachim Goldbach was in on 30 May 1997 Wall Protect processes for complicity to 3 years and 3 months imprisonment homicide convicted and twice to attempted manslaughter.

With a decision of February 7, 2001, the criminal enforcement chamber of the Berlin Regional Court suspended the execution of the remaining custodial sentence against Joachim Goldbach from March 18, 2001 after serving two thirds of the sentence on probation.
