Joachim W. Härtling

Joachim W. Härtling (* 1959 in Würzburg ) is a German geographer and professor of physical geography at the University of Osnabrück .

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1978 in Kitzingen , Härtling first earned a Bachelor of Arts in geography from Brock University in St. Catharines , Ontario , Canada and the first state examination in geography , sports and education at the University of Freiburg , before completing his studies in 1988 as a Master of Graduated from Queen's University in Kingston , Ontario, with a degree in physical geography . After graduating, he stayed in Canada, where he worked as a research fellow and lecturer at the Institute for Environmental Health at Ryerson University in Toronto .

After returning to Germany and another teaching position , Härtling received his doctorate in 1992 at the University of Gießen at the Institute for Geography there on the subject of municipal waste disposal in the Canadian Arctic. Environmental aspects of water supply, sewage disposal and waste management in the Baffin Region, Northwest Territories, Canada and was habilitated in 1998 at the Institute for Physical Geography at the University of Freiburg with the writing Small-scale differentiation of near-surface sediments in northeastern Lake Ontario, Canada .

Since 2001 he has been professor of physical geography at the University of Osnabrück, where he holds other offices. This is how Härtling u. a. as dean and dean of studies of the Faculty of Culture and Geosciences, as head of the Institute for Geography and as a long-standing senator of the university, before he was appointed to the Osnabrück University Presidium as Vice President for Studies and Teaching in 2012 .

Härtling's research areas are primarily in the areas of geoecology of inland waters , paleolimnology and geoarchaeology as well as in environmental planning and assessment. In terms of space, his projects focus primarily on North America and Canada as well as the Osnabrück region and north-west Germany, in accordance with his stays .

In addition to his academic career, he works as an expert in the field of environmental assessment .
