Jacobus Sackmann (born February 13, 1643 in Hanover (Calenberger Neustadt), † May 23, 1718 in Limmer ), actually Jacobus Sackman , often also Jobst Sackmann , was a German Protestant theologian , known for his Low German sermons.

Life

Born as the son of a butcher and church leader in the Calenberger Neustadt in Hanover , Sackmann attended the Latin school and the Illustre grammar school in Bremen . He studied theology in Jena from 1665 to 1667 and in 1680 became pastor at the Nikolaikirche in Limmer , a village near Hanover. Ahlem, Davenstedt and Velber also belonged to the parish . Sackmann became famous for his sermons in the Calenberger Platt, the wit and heartiness of which could even be heard in the Hanoverian court circles. The contemporary Abraham a Santa Claras , like his Viennese colleague, preached with the “voice of the people”, so he did not mince his words and criticized both abuses in church and state as well as the moral decline of simple and high-ranking people.

In a funeral speech, Sackmann praised Pastor David Erythropel, who works at the Aegidienkirche in Hanover, as a “good dialecticus ”.

The Jacobus Sackman memorial stone in front of the Nikolaikirche
“I laughed from hertzen about the beautiful sermon from dorfpfaff”, wrote the Electress Sophie on August 17, 1710 to her niece Liselotte von der Pfalz (“Euer Liebdgen”, EL) in Paris; “I am amazed that EL did not have coriositet to hear the eloquent priest. But I find his apostrophes a little too harsh; you can forgive him a little, but Anton Ulrich drew the lack of respect towards hert, which deserves to be harder than taut, then it seems to me that one should have forbidden him the cantzel ... Honors

  • Before 1901, the historic local street in Limmer was renamed Sackmannstrasse .
  • Today a memorial stone in front of 'his' Nikolaikirche in Limmer reminds of this original representative of his church. There you can find the original spelling of the name - with an "n".

According to Johann Anton Strubberg , Heinrich Wilhelm Rotermund and Daniel Eberhard Baring , however, David Erythropel was a preacher at the Aegidienkirche.
