Johann von Münsterberg (also: Johann von Podiebrad ; Johann von Münsterberg-Oels ; Johann von Münsterberg-Bernstadt; Czech: Hanuš z Minstrberka ; * November 4, 1509 in Oels ; † February 28, 1565 ibid) was Duke of Münsterberg , 1542– 1565 Duke of Oels and 1548–1565 Duke of Bernstadt . He also carried the title of Count von Glatz .

Life

Johann came from the Münsterberger family branch of the Bohemian noble family Podiebrad . His parents were Karl I von Münsterberg and Oels and Anna (1480 / 83–1541), daughter of Duke Johann II von Sagan .

On February 20, 1536, Johann married Christina Katharina von Schidlowitz ( Krystina Katarzyna Szydlowiecka ; 1519–1556). After the death of his father Karl I in the same year, Johann and his brothers Joachim , Heinrich II and Georg II initially ruled together. On June 25, 1536, in a joint document, the city of Silberberg, which belongs to the Duchy of Münsterberg, was granted the rights of a free mining town . In contrast to their father, Johann and his brothers professed Lutheran teaching. In 1537 they expelled the Catholic clergy from Münsterberg and appointed Protestant preachers. In the same year he and his brothers renounced the inheritance claims to the Duchy of Crossen after Joachim had received from Elector Joachim I the promise of a claim to the diocese of Lebus or Brandenburg .

In 1542 the four brothers pledged the indebted Duchy of Münsterberg to their uncle, Duke Friedrich II of Liegnitz. In the same year the other possessions were divided: Heinrich II. Received the Duchy of Bernstadt , Joachim, the eldest of the brothers, was to become Bishop of Brandenburg , while Johann continued the government in the Duchy of Oels. There he arranged for the castle to be converted into a renaissance castle and a four-storey pre-castle to be built to serve as a widow's seat .

After the Duchy of Münsterberg again came to the Podiebrad in 1559, it was ruled by Johann again. After the death of his first wife, on September 8, 1561, he married Margarete , a daughter of Heinrich II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , whom Johann survived by fifteen years. After Johann's death in 1565 he was followed by his only son, Karl Christoph, as Duke of Münsterberg. The Duchy of Oels inherited Johann's nephew Karl II , the Duchy of Bernstadt his brother Heinrich III. who sold it in 1574.

Already in 1557, after the death of his first wife, Johann had a sandstone tumba built for Christina and himself for the castle church in Oels . It was created by the court sculptor Johannes Oslew from Würzburg and is decorated with floral patterns and heraldic shields. Two lions lie at the feet of the life-size figures of the ducal couple.

Johann's son Karl Christoph died after a short reign as Duke of Münsterberg in 1569 at the age of only 24. Since he left no descendants, the Duchy of Münsterberg fell back to the Crown of Bohemia by reversion . The duchies of Oels and Bernstadt remained with the Münsterberg branch of the Lords of Podebrady . They received the right to continue to use the title of Duke of Münsterberg.
