Life

The coat of arms of the Paris family

Johann Benedikt von Paris came from the Augsburg line (part of the southern German line) of the Paris family who owned the Gailenbach Castle in Edenbergen with the associated nobility (“von und zu Gailenbach”). The southern German line of the von Paris family had a shield divided across the line: at the top, in silver, a blue lion striding along the dividing line, at the bottom three two-to-one golden lilies on a red background. With small changes, this coat of arms became the coat of arms of the village of Edenbergen in the Augsburg district .

His father was Johann Christoph Sigmund von Paris , his mother Sybilla Magdalena Barbara , née von Furtenbach auf Hummelsberg . After visiting the school at St. Anna in Augsburg, he received training in the merchant being in a Leipzig trading company to assist it in several trips, among others, to Bohemia , England , Flanders , France , the Netherlands and Switzerland and after Hungary introduced. In doing so, he learned several foreign languages .

In 1813 and 1814 he worked as a speculator in Frankfurt am Main and married his wife Caroline Katharine von Kiesow here on May 26, 1814 († December 3, 1875). Due to the death of his brother, Johann Benedikt returned home in 1816 and took over Gailenbach Castle. In 1817 he bought the Kingdom of Bavaria , the two last year for 3786 guilders allodialisierten Farms in Gailenbach from and leased it then. In the meantime, he also acquired the baronial court brands in Rinnenthal , Harthausen and Malzhausen , which he later sold again. In 1822 he was appointed treasurer of the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Obituary notice of Johann Benedikt von Paris

In the later years of his life, he was particularly burdened by the death of three adult children, including his only son Johann Christoph Eduard († May 7, 1833), and withdrew more and more into private life. In addition to agriculture, from then on he mainly devoted himself to his collection of antiquities (including prints, manuscripts, copperplate engravings, seal impressions and historical weapons) and the writing of a story about Gailenbach Castle. On January 4, 1836, he and his wife founded a foundation, the proceeds of which were to go primarily to his “old” high school near Sankt Anna in Augsburg.

Johann Benedikt died on April 24, 1838 of a pleural and / or pericardial effusion , whereupon his widow left the Gailenbach Castle with the associated manor to the foundation for an annual pension of 1,200 guilders . Johann Benedikt's collection was given to the Historical Association for the Government District of Swabia and Neuburg and is now in the Augsburg City Archives .
