Johann Eduard Friedrich Schmidt von Altenstadt (born December 6, 1836 in Magdeburg , † May 30, 1925 in Groß-Medunischken ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

He was the son of the captain of the artillery a. D. Johann Georg Eduard Schmidt von Altenstadt (1796–1850) and his wife Johanna Friederike Auguste Ernestin, née Homann (1797–1864).

Military career

Schmidt attended the educational center in Halle and the Magdeburg monastery high school . On October 1, 1854, he joined the 10th Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army in Aschersleben as a hussar . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant on November 4, 1856 , and in the further course of his military career for further training from October 1, 1861 for three years at the War Academy and then until May 31, 1865 to the 4th Artillery Brigade. In the meantime promoted to Prime Lieutenant, Schmidt took part in the German War in 1866 as an adjutant of the combined Landwehr-Cavalry Division of the I. Reserve Army Corps .

On September 17, 1866 he was adjutant of the 1st Division in Königsberg and on April 11, 1867, while remaining in this position, he was transferred to the Magdeburg Dragoons Regiment No. 6 and promoted to Rittmeister . On January 21, 1868 he was transferred to the General Staff of the VI. Army Corps . In this position Schmidt took part in the sieges of Pfalzburg and Paris and the battles at Choisy-le-Roi , Chevilly and Thions during the Franco-German War in 1870/71 . For his achievements he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the peace treaty Schmidt returned with the promotion to major on June 20, 1872 for a year in the troop service and commanded a squadron in the Kurmärkischen Dragoon Regiment No. 14 in Colmar . Subsequently transferred to the General Staff , he was from March 10, 1874 to April 14, 1876 in the General Staff of the III. Army Corps . This was followed by another assignment in the General Staff, before he was assigned to the 2nd Brandenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 12 on September 30 and then to the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment on November 22, 1877 . As a lieutenant colonel , he was appointed commander of the 3rd Silesian Dragoons Regiment No. 15 stationed in Hagenau on October 12, 1878 . As such, he became a colonel on October 18, 1883 . In position à la suite of his regiment, Schmidt was appointed commander of the 15th Cavalry Brigade in Cologne on March 11, 1886 . After his farewell, Schmidt took care of the cultivation of the Groß-Medunischken land that his wife had brought in. For several years he was also a member of the Darkehmen committee .

Schmidt had married Anna Theodora von Bujack (1848-1910) on June 28, 1868 in Groß-Medunischken. The marriage produced several children, including:
