Count Johann Günther von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen

Johann Günther I von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , also known as: Hans Günther (* December 20, 1532 in Sondershausen ; † October 28, 1586 in Arnstadt ) was regent of the Grafschaft Schwarzburg since 1552 and Count von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen since 1571 . He is the founder of the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen line.

Life

Johann Günther was a son of Count Günther XL. von Schwarzburg (1499–1552), who was called "the rich" or "the one with the fat mouth" , and his wife Countess Elisabeth († 14 May 1572), a daughter of Count Philipp von Isenburg-Büdingen zu Ronneburg .

Catholic in his youth and intended for a church career, Johann Günther converted to the Evangelical Lutheran Church after the death of his father. He lived temporarily at the court of Elector Moritz von Sachsen and fought with him against Margrave Albrecht of Brandenburg-Kulmbach , where he was also involved in the battle of Sievershausen . His successor August confirmed the customs privilege of the salt trade in Frankenhausen.

After the death of his father, Johann Günther and his three brothers ruled the country together. He chose the town of Sondershausen as his residence, after which the part of the country was named Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.

In 1571 the brothers decided to divide their county and thus Johann Günther received the rule of Sondershausen in the sub-rule. He signed the Agreement Formula of 1577 and the Book of Agreement of 1580.

With his oldest brother Günther XLI. he had fought in the Netherlands in 1583 and distinguished himself in the conquest of Saint-Quentin .

After his brothers Günther XLI. von Schwarzburg-Arnstadt in 1583 and Wilhelm von Schwarzburg-Frankenhausen in 1597 had died without descendants, the heirs of Johann Günther and his brother Albrecht VII of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , stipulated in the Stadtilm Treaty of November 21, 1599, shared the Schwarzburg territories. The heirs of Johann Günther, the founder of the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen line , received areas around Sondershausen and Arnstadt with Gehren . Count Albrecht VII (1537–1605), the founder of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt line , got the property around Rudolstadt with Leutenberg and Frankenhausen .
