Johann Georg Bossi
Johann Georg Maria Lorenz Bossi (born August 10, 1773 in Mon , Graubünden , † January 9, 1844 in Chur ) was Roman Catholic bishop of the unified diocese of Chur - St. Gallen .
Life
The son of the farmer Paul Jakob Johann Peter Bossi and his wife Maria Barbara Katharina, b. Wiezel first attended grammar school in Feldkirch and then in Ottobeuren . After graduating from high school, he entered the seminary in Chur. As an alumnus , he studied philosophy and theology at the Swiss College (Collegium Helveticum - Collegio Elvetico) in Milan in 1791 . After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest on April 15, 1797 . Briefly educator at Castle Burg Löwenberg ob Schluein in Surselva , he was pastor in Trimmis from 1799–1800 and pastor in his home parish of Mons from 1800–1824. In 1818 he became dean of the regional chapter "Ob und Unter dem Schyn". In 1826, Bishop Karl Rudolf von Buol-Schauenstein appointed him as a cathedral scholar in the Chur cathedral chapter. After the death of Bishop Schauenstein on October 23, 1833, Johann Georg Bossi was elected vicar of the chapter by the cathedral chapter on the 29th of the same month ; St. Gallen the cathedral chapter appointed the canons Johann Nepomuk Zurich to Bistumsverweser .
The papal bull for the establishment of the double diocese provided that the future bishops would be elected by both chapters. Called for the first time, they could not come to an agreement, they let the election period pass, so that the Holy See presented Johann Georg Bossi as its candidate on November 19, 1834, and his appointment by Pope Gregory XVI on April 6, 1835 . took place. He received his episcopal ordination on July 5, 1835 in the collegiate church of Einsiedeln Abbey, the Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland Filippo de Angelis , co- consecrators were the Abbot of Einsiedeln Abbey, Cölestin Müller and the abbot of Pfäfers Abbey , Plazidus Pfister . The secular organs of Chur and St. Gallen and the cathedral chapter of St. Gallen rejected the bishop and refused to recognize him. He was prevented from entering the episcopal living quarters by sealing. In response to pressure from above, Bossi was only recognized as an Apostolic Vicar in St. Gallen and that was only "provisionally". The clergy were forbidden from any contact with Bishop Bossi in the event of threat of punishment. The exercise of episcopal jurisdiction in the canton of St. Gallen and the use of the episcopal seal with the inscription "Bishop of Chur and St. Gallen" was prohibited. Pope Gregory XVI, who learned of the events, smashed the double diocese, placed the former bishopric directly under the Holy See and appointed Johann Peter Mirer as Apostolic Vicar and from April 20, 1847 as Bishop of the newly founded diocese of St. Gallen on April 8 . In 1838 the canton of Glarus severed its connection with the diocese of Chur. Against massive resistance from the bishop, the canton government took over the boys' school attached to the St. Luzi seminary as a Catholic canton school.
Bossi wrote some prayer books in Romansh.
In 1838 Bishop Johann Georg Bossi suffered a stroke, which severely restricted his activities and he could no longer leave the bishop's house. In Kaspar de Carl ab Hohenbalken in 1843 he received a coadjutor who succeeded him on the bishopric of Chur.
Johann Georg Bossi died on January 9, 1844 in Chur and was buried in the cemetery next to the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary in Chur.
