Johann Georg Lori , from 1768 by Lori (born July 17, 1723 in Steingaden , † March 23, 1787 in Neuburg an der Donau ) was a senior Bavarian civil servant , lawyer and historian in the Age of Enlightenment .

Life

The landlord's son Lori was born in Gründl near Steingaden. In Steingaden he went to elementary school before he switched to the Jesuit College St. Salvator in Augsburg . From 1740 he began studying law in Dillingen and from 1744 in Würzburg . The wealthy Augsburg patrician and later mayor Jakob Wilhelm Benedikt von Langenmantel was one of the financial sponsors of his education. In Würzburg, Lori was shaped by the new views of the Enlightenment . In 1748 he wrote a doctoral thesis in Ingolstadt with Johann Georg Weishaupt . In 1749 he was appointed professor of criminal law and legal history there. As a sympathizer of the philosophy of the enlightened Christian Wolff , he came into conflict there with the Jesuits, whereupon he was appointed court advisor to the Münz- und Bergwerkskollegium in Munich. He was initially a member of the Bavarian learned society Parnassus Boicus and then, in collaboration with Provost Franz Töpsl , Andreas Felix von Oefele and Johann Georg Dominicus von Linprun, founded the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , which was founded by Elector Maximilian III. Joseph was consummated in 1759. After the academy was founded, he held the important position of secretary there until 1761. In 1768 he became a real secret councilor and trainee lawyer for foreign affairs. Lori's political career ended in June 1779. Because he had been on the side of the Prussian-friendly "Patriot Party" during the War of the Bavarian Succession , Elector Karl Theodor relieved him of his office and had him exiled to Neuburg an der Donau.

Work and works

Lori published several historical works. Only the second volume of his History of Lechrain was published in 1765 with a source collection that has not been replaced to this day. As chief mining director , Count Sigmund von Haimhausen had Lori write down the historical development of Bavarian mining law and mining.

Politically he was involved in the peace negotiations with Prussia of 1762/63 and later, after the abolition of the Jesuit order , in the distribution of the order's assets.
