Johann Gottlob Marezoll

Johann Gottlob Marezoll (born December 25, 1761 in Plauen ; † January 15, 1828 in Jena ) was a German theologian , preacher and university professor .

Life

Marezoll grew up in poor conditions and was only able to attend the grammar school in Plauen and finally start studying with the support organized by his mother . From 1775 he studied at the University of Leipzig . There he was influenced, among others, by Samuel Friedrich Nathanael More , Georg Joachim Zollikofer and Christian Felix Weisse . After graduating in 1783 and passing the candidate exam in Dresden , he initially worked as a tutor and began to publish.

His writings brought him in 1789 a reputation for a position as a university preacher at the University of Göttingen one. In 1790 he also became an associate professor of theology and director of the local preachers' seminary . In Göttingen he was ordained as a preacher and in 1794 by the University of Helmstedt he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD .

In the same year he followed a call to Copenhagen as chief pastor at the German Petrikirche . However, the climate there didn't suit him and he returned in 1803 through Johann Gottfried Herder's mediation and became consistorial advisor, superintendent and pastor in Jena . In addition, he became honorary professor of theology at the University of Jena , he resigned the professorship a year later and concentrated on his ministry.

Marezoll was already celebrated as a preacher in Göttingen, and his reputation continued in the following places of activity. Many of his sermons were printed, and his devotional book for women appeared in multiple editions and has been translated into Danish, Swedish and Dutch. The work on the determination of the pulpit speaker is considered representative of the homiletics of the Enlightenment theology .

The legal scholar Theodor Marezoll was his son.
