Röder organ in Breslau, contemporary engraving

Johann Michael Röder was a German organ builder in Berlin and Silesia from the first half of the 18th century. He was a student of Arp Schnitger .

biography

The year of Röder's birth and death are unknown. He apprenticed to Schnitger as a carpenter journeyman for four years. Vincent Lübeck referred to him in a letter to the Tangermünder council in 1712 as a “grand spokesman” who “very slandered and despised Mr. Schnitger”. The influence of his teacher can be clearly heard in Röder's works, but he went his own way in the external design of the organs and distanced himself further from Schnitger than any of his students. So he gave up the principle of work, dispensed with a Rückpositiv and built the prospectus rather flat. His special technical skills earned him the name “Mechanicus” and led to all sorts of late baroque gadgets, such as angels beating timpani, eagles, stars of the order, suns and others.

Johann Mattheson commented positively on Röder's organ in Breslau: “All emperors, kings and princes would have to be amazed when they saw the engraving of it, and this passes. of 56 soundable pieces: 4 principals, as one a 32, one a 16 and two a 8 feet, a carillon which was played by the angels moving in the Gloria with their hammers in their hands with the help of Ped. is tracted, as well as a pair of beater (visible) timpani, whereupon two angels perfectly present everything that can be had on natural timpani with their mallets and intrades can be played as lifts with the trumpet pull. "
