Johann Nikolaus Knoll
Johann Nikolaus Knoll (* 1667 in Hof ; † April 25, 1735 in Hof ) was a German sculptor from the Knoll family of sculptors . Together with his son Wolfgang Adam Knoll , he furnished numerous churches in the Hof area, some completely.

Life
Johann Nikolaus Knoll was the son of master butcher Erhard Knoll and Anna Katharina, nee Wolf. He was baptized on April 30, 1667, the exact date of birth is not known. Contrary to the family tradition, Johann Nikolaus trained as a carpenter, which opened the way for him to sculpture. He probably learned from the Kulmbacher Hans Georg Brenk. In 1697 he married Magdalena Kunigunde († April 22, 1735), the daughter of the high school teacher Johann Georg Erb. He had a hereditary burial in the former cemetery of the St. Lorenz Church , a tomb has not been preserved.
The local researcher Hans Hofner prepared a catalog raisonné of his work. His early works include the pulpits in Konradsreuth (1692) and in the hospital church Hof (1693) with rich auricles . In 1698 he created the crucifix and a first baptismal angel for the Leonhardskirche in Köditz . He made complete interior fittings for churches, consisting of pulpit , altar , including the first pulpit altars , baptismal angels and organ cases in 1698 in Köditz , 1704 in Joditz , in Ölsnitz , Berg and Leupoldsgrün , in 1716 in Schauenstein , 1725 in Selbitz and in Kürbitz near Plauen . From a free-standing pulpit altar in Gattendorf from 1707/1708, individual figures are still preserved, which his son had taken over in the pulpit altar made by him.
