Johann Wächter (born December 5, 1767 in Zeben , Sáros County , Kingdom of Hungary ; † April 26, 1827 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ) was an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran theologian . He was Superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent of Vienna and the first director of the Evangelical Theological Institute in Vienna.

Life

Johann Wächter, whose father was a Protestant pastor in Zeben, attended high school in Ödenburg , where he was taught by the historian Martin von Schwartner (1759–1823). In 1778 he moved to the grammar school in Eperies and in 1780 to the lyceum in Kesmark . There, he taught his eponymous uncle Johann guard by the methods of the British educator Joseph Lancaster in theology , philosophy and philology . When Wächter's father died in 1784, his uncle took his father's place.

After finishing school, Johann Wächter initially worked as a private tutor for various Hungarian noble families in his home town of Zeben. He then studied Protestant theology at the University of Jena from 1792 to 1794 . After a short return to Zeben, Johann Wächter went to Vienna to give religious instruction to the daughter of Baron von Calisius. It was here that Johann Georg Fock , the Lutheran superintendent of Vienna, became aware of him and on July 1, 1794, he became the vicar and catechist in the Lutheran City Church in Vienna. In 1796 he was appointed third and in 1797 second preacher of the parish. In the same year he became spiritual councilor of the kk Konsistoriums AB

In 1806 he was elected first preacher and, as the successor to Johann Samuel Kaltenstein († 1805), appointed superintendent of the Vienna Superintendentur AB, which at that time also included Lower and Inner Austria . In 1818/19, Emperor Franz I founded the Evangelical Theological Institute, which later became the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna , and Johann Wächter became its first director. He worked both as a Viennese superintendent and as the director of the Evangelical Theological Institute until his death.

Johann Wächter's grave is located at the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery in Vienna.
