Johann von Klein

Johann von Klein (born June 11, 1659 in Rostock ; † September 11, 1732 ibid) was a German legal scholar and professor of law and pandects at the University of Rostock .

Life

Johann Klein was born as the son of the university professor Christian Klein. Enrolled at the University of Rostock in 1670, he went to Frankfurt (Oder) in 1678 , returned to Rostock in 1679/80 and was enrolled again at the university.

From 1679 to 1682 Johann Klein was Hofmeister to the Lords of Oertzen and von Lehsten . In the following years he taught at the Albertus University of Königsberg (1683) and the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (1684), where he already gave private lectures.

In 1686 Klein was promoted to Dr. juris and worked from then on as a lawyer and private lecturer in Rostock.

Act

In 1691 Johann Klein was appointed Professor of Rights and Pandects at the University of Rostock by Duke Christian Ludwig I, succeeding Johann Festing (* around 1655; † 1691), who held the position from 1685 to 1691.

Afterwards, Klein also gained importance outside the university. In October 1700 he was appointed real councilor of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I and at the same time vice chancellor of the Justice Chancellery in Schwerin. A year later he also became a member of the secret chancellery council and a member of the secret council. In 1702 he was promoted to the secret government council and also became director of the law firms in Schwerin and Rostock.

In 1708 he took part as envoy at the wedding of the Prussian King Friedrich I with Princess Sophie Luise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . In the course of these events, Klein was ennobled by the king and appointed to the Queen's Secret Council. Since he found himself increasingly exposed to the envy of his colleagues and fellow men through such successes and honors, he asked for a quieter position and was appointed President of the Court and Regional Court in Güstrow in 1709, but did not take up this position until 1715. Instead, at the request of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I, he remained at court as his chancellor.

In 1715 he retired from office and gave up his professorship and took up his position as court and district court president.

In 1716 von Klein withdrew even further and settled in Lübeck as a private citizen. In 1719 he returned to Mecklenburg and from 1730 lived again in Rostock, where he died two years later. The couple had 11 children.

Johann von Klein was married twice. In 1687 he married Margarete von Dassel from Lübeck, who however died a year later. Therefore, in 1690 he married Margarete Gerdes, a daughter of the mayor of Güstow Martin Christian Gerdens .
