John I (Litomysl)
Johannes von Leitomischl (also: Johannes I .; Czech: Jan I. z Litomyšle ; † 1353 ) was the first bishop of Leitomischl .
Life
Johannes was a Premonstratensian chorister and came in 1328 from the Seelau Abbey to Klosterbruck near Znaim , where he was elected abbot . After the establishment of the diocese Litomysl, he became its first bishop in 1344. The episcopal ordination took place on November 21, 1344 in Prague by Archbishop Ernst von Pardubitz .
His term of office was burdened by the unclear ownership structure, which resulted from the partial dissolution of the Leitomischler Premonstratensian Foundation in favor of the newly founded diocese. On behalf of Pope Clement VI. the legal relationships between the bishop, the previous monastery and the cathedral chapter were clarified and agreed in 1347 by the Breslau bishop Preczlaw von Pogarell . In the same year, Emperor Charles IV secured the diocese freedom over the episcopal possessions. The difficult negotiations with the dioceses of Olomouc and Prague , which had to cede areas from their territory to the diocese of Litomysl, could not be completed until 1350.
Under his rule, the construction of the city wall began in Litomysl. A city wall was planned for the episcopal cities of Wildenschwert and Landskron . John died in the first half of 1353. He was buried in the former church of the Premonstratensian monastery, which had become a cathedral after the founding of the diocese.
