Johannes Lippius (born June 24, 1585 in Strasbourg , † September 24, 1612 in Speyer ) was a German Protestant theologian , philosopher and music theorist .

Life

Johannes Lippius was the son of the pastor at the Protestant Church of St. Peter in Strasbourg since 1529 Johannes Lippius (1554–1622) and his wife Susanna Klehmann. He had already received training in languages ​​and the seven liberal arts at an early age, so that he was promoted to a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Strasbourg at a young age . Up to the age of twenty-one he had given private lectures and lectures at the university, then moved to the University of Leipzig , in 1606 the University of Wittenberg , the University of Frankfurt (Oder) , the University of Jena , where he became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty, and the University of Erfurt .

At all universities he had devoted himself to theological studies and had also given lectures in the philosophical sciences himself. After a short stay at the court in Weimar , he returned to his hometown via the universities of Altdorf , Ingolstadt and Tübingen . There he was appointed professor of theology in place of Philipp Marbach . For completing his PhD doctorate in theology, he went to the University of Giessen . After completing his doctorate on August 28, 1612, he wanted to return to Strasbourg, but fell ill with a heated fever during the return journey in Speyer and died. His body was buried in Speyer on September 25th.

Even before his untimely death, Lippius had earned an excellent reputation as a philosopher and music theorist. Above all, he tried to bring basic philosophical themes into his compositions. So he himself became a pioneer of modern harmony theory.
