John Adel Elya BS (born September 16, 1928 in Maghduscha , Lebanon , † July 19, 2019 ) was a Lebanese religious and Melkite bishop of Newton ( USA ).

Life

After joining the religious community of the Basilians of the Most Holy Redeemer , John Adel Elya took his religious vows in 1949 . He studied philosophy and theology and was ordained a priest on February 17, 1952 . As a priest he was in Jordan, Manchester (New Hampshire) , Toronto ( Canada ) and Lawrence ( Massachusetts ) operates. He then became church rector at the Melkite Cathedral in Roslindale (Massachusetts). While serving as a priest, he earned his master's degree in theology from Boston College . At the Pontifical Gregorian University doctorate he became a doctor of theology . He then taught moral theology and philosophy in the monastery of the Holy Savior in Lebanon. He later took over the office of rector at the seminary of St. Basil in Methuen, Massachusetts.

In 1977 Elya was made Archimandrite . This was followed on March 21, 1986 by Pope John Paul II's appointment as auxiliary bishop in Newton with the simultaneous appointment as titular bishop of Abila Lysaniae . He was ordained bishop on June 29, 1986 by Archbishop Maximos V. Hakim , Patriarch of Antioch . Co- consecrators were Joseph Elias Tawil , Archbishop Emeritus of Newton, and Michel Hakim BS, Apostolic Exarch Emeritus of Canada . He succeeded his predecessor Ignatius Ghattas in the office of Bishop of Newton on November 25, 1993 . On his 50th jubilee as a priest he received the personal congratulations from John Paul II. He was the national prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in the United States.

During his tenure he was a co- consecrator of Ibrahim Michael Ibrahim BS, Bishop of Montréal . On June 22, 2004 he retired and handed over his office to his successor, Cyrille Salim Bustros . John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.
