John Neves

John Oliveira Neves (born October 22, 1931 in Mansfield , Massachusetts , † July 18, 1988 in Boston ) was an American jazz musician ( double bass ).

John Neves grew up as one of ten children in a family on Boston's Trenton Street. First he played the violin and then taught himself to play the double bass. He soon appeared in Boston clubs like the Stables and Storyville . Neves worked from the mid-1950s in Boston with Herb Pomeroy ( Jazz in a Stable , 1955); he was a member of Herb Pomeroy's big band for 13 years and taught at Berklee College of Music . From the end of the decade he played a. a. also with George Shearing / Billy May , Lem Winchester ( New Faces at Newport , 1958), Johnny Rae , Gerry Mulligan , Jaki Byard , Marian McPartland and Maynard Ferguson , in 1961 he played with Stan Getz , heard on Recorded Fall 1961 (with Bob Brookmeyer ), Getz at the Gate and Focus . In 1962 he made a guest appearance with Carol Sloane and Coleman Hawkins at the Newport Jazz Festival .

In the following years he continued to work on recordings by Gary Burton , Steve Kuhn / Toshiko Akiyoshi , Tubby Hayes , in later years in Boston with JR Mitchell , Herb Pomeroy and most recently in 1986 in a trio with Al Francis and Joe Hunt ( Jazz Bohemia Revisited ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 25 recording sessions between 1955 and 1986, according to Tom Lord .

His older brother Paul Neves (1930–1981) worked as a pianist a. a. with Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Lucky Thompson .
